Cluncking Sound
« on: June 26, 2006, 05:51:14 PM »
I just had my beetle lowered in the front when I was hearing an odd cluncking noise, the struts were totally hooped so I figured that it was the problem. Now that it is finished the clunking is still there, I checked the transaxel and found that while it is in gear there is a lots of play in the back wheels and it makes the wierd clucking noise when moved back and forth. I was just woundering if anyone had some thoughts of what the best course of action is.... besides throwing in a new tranny.

Thanks

Take off the hubcaps and see if the nuts on the axle ends move differently than the drums, look at the mount in the front of the transaxle, if it's IRS look at the CV joints.

All of these tests are best done with the car in 1st gear, engine off on a level surfage while a buddy rocks the car back and forth and you look for the clunk.
