Reduction Boxes
« on: December 30, 2005, 05:27:51 PM »
I changed the oil in my reduction boxes then filled them back up using gear oil . I filled them up to the top plug but half leaked out from somewhere I'm assuming I have a bad axle seal or did I just over fill them?

The oil may have sloshed back into the gearbox.  Did you park it tilted to one side recently?

So there must have been a puddle of oil?

They do share the oil, through the axle tubes.  However, if everything is empty, filling the gearbox will not fill the redux boxes, so that's why you have a filler and drain on each redux box.

Yeah there was a puddle of oil under each box thats what I was wondering if it was a leak or is there an over fill drain  cus I thought it should have filled to the top

Are your drums off?  With out the drums on and tight ,oil can leak through or under the axle spacer.

Drain plug tight?  You can put a wrap of teflon tape around the threads of the drain plug to better seal it.

Wheels and drums are on and drain plug is tight but when I filled it the wheels were off it's got 33x12.5's  on it and filling it with the wheels on is difficult

Wheels don't matter. But the drums were never off or lose during this time?
If so , it may just be time take them off and change the axle seals and gaskets etc.  Probably over due anyway.

I did take the drums off to fix the wheel cylinders then slid them back on and tightened the nuts
