Egspot 1966 Vw
« on: May 22, 2006, 09:12:17 AM »

Well here is a start.

I have challenges as to what I am able to work on where i live. Thanks to a friend I am able to do this project at his place.

For starters, We cleaned the pan and found that it is in very good shape. The channels on the other hand are not. So the next set of pictures will be about that part of the project.

Fenders, bumpers are off. We started to take the bolts off and it was a humbling experience.

I am work in progress (WIP), and probably that will always be the case.I

know that I may not be able to do it all my self. That being said, it is my intend to know every inch of that project. What I do not know, I will have to learn and the members at ASF are a wealth of knowledge that I can tap into.

In the mean time 40 years old bolts are off between the body and pan. Holly $%@^&. We have steel supports for across between  the doors and front to back on  both sides.

Pictures soon.

I am very fortunate to have friends who help me along. The last time I took such enterprise I was 23 Years of age. I did not change the channels that time.

The good:

We are making progress and most of the pan rust is surface.

The bad:

Things keep popping up. That is goog when you are on a date but, not so good when you take things apart to clean the and realize you have to get a new part.

Pan  and body are apart. Now the fun and games begin.

Before you cut the heater channels out, you should put in some more crossbracing. Make an \"X\" inside the frame you have alrady built.

Emillio sorry I did not get more of a chance to visit with you the other week But you know how it is with a teenager waiting in the car.  Looks like you are doing a great job on the car I wish mine was at the same stage let me know if the internal bracing for the doors is going to work as I am trying the same thing Is that the original back seat brace in the frame ? How was the DVD ?

Hi Dave,

If you see above, Matt had a great sudgestion for a cross bar inside the frame.

The video was very informative, and while we took a different approach, it is based on the knowledge we got from the video.

We built those saw horses tall in order to be able to wheel out the pan is we need to.  Once  all bolt where out we jacked up the body intil we could use 2\"X4\"X6' under the concave areas  on the front and rear with two guys lifting and tho others placing the saw horses in place.

Thanks again

AND THE BEAT GOES ON....

Hi Guys,

I just spent 6 hrs taking out 12  1/2\" bolt to remove my 1966 doors. Those bolts have been there for 40 years. There were painted after the installation. Those Germans knew that some day, somewhere, somebody was going to try and take them out. and then there was I.

The bug me video said that I needed a #4 Philips screw driver. Apparently, in the Lower Mainland none has ever heard or seen one of those, So if I ever find them I should purchase a shipload of the and sell scredrivers for a living. I believe when they did the video, They loosen up everything before the film and that is why it looks so easy (they did not wanted to loose production time...and CUT.)

UPDATE:

We got the doors out. and started patching the floor pan. The putty (paste stuff covering the spot welds) has been removed. Now we know where the problems are. Getting some miscellaneous parts from A_S.

Now Pictures

Not sure about this....maybe its just me but....that frame you have bolted to the inside of the car should be welded in...or atleast have more than one bolt in each corner. The door gaps gonna open up when you cut those heater channels out!

i agree.

also, welding in an \"X\" cross brace will help eliminate the fore and aft flex.

So We worked it only one day this week end.

X bars  in place.

most spot welds removed on the right channel.

We have also changed our approach for the floor pan and will proceed to fabricate and patch instead of just cleaning the bad areas and filling it in .

The bad news is that as expected poop happens and there are small things that slow the progress.

AS THE OLD GREAT MASTER SAID:

WORD OF CAUTION.

The cage should be built so the it does not interfere with the cutting of the channels at the door post . Advice, For what it is worth

NOTE: Not much to report this week.

Due to problems with my daily driven, the week was spent fixing it.

I get back to it tomorrow.

What you guys think about that right rear wheel house panel. I am thinking of fabricating panels for it and then getting the bumper pieces.

FYI:

Just an observation to confirm that when changing the heating channels. The rust does makes it more difficult to remove the old one than what it appears on the Bug Me Video.

Saturday went very well and we did made progress. However, it is slow and as they say, patience is a virtue.

Keep you posted next week end.
