Paint!
« on: April 02, 2005, 11:37:38 PM »
So now that I have mastered the art of applying seam seal with a brush leaving no marks, I want to move on to paint work, yeah I dont think so, well actually I was thinking about it, but first of I was looking to see what people may have paid for paint jobs on beetles.

This is what I have, a 61 shell, with nothing in it, no glass, no interior, nothing. Its also bare metal, except a few small spots. I also have 4 fiberglass fenders. So if I wanted to get it painted with a nice blue or whatever, nothing super special, just a basic paint job, where should I go and what would you think I would expect to pay for this?

Thanks

i got mine done at New Horizons. i took the car apart myself and gave it to them in pieces. i went thru Norm and Garray(sp) the owners. I paid $2000 and Norm did it on the side cash job. took it down to bare metal all the body work painted inside and out. The one draw back was he had the car for around 9 weeks...but holy shit was it worth it! He even trailered it back to my house for me when it was all done....ive also had him do some other work on my gti(shaving doors and fenders) and when some a$$holes vandelized my car he fixed my W decklid which icbc said couldnt be fixed. Highly recommended!

Post some pics or jst email me a few, I can give a rough estimate from Bellingham.  You don't have to give me the work, it's just that I see these things all the time and can fairly well judge what you want to know.

There it is, but with fiberglass fenders, its straight, paint free inside and out.

looks like a big job- it needs to be either etched or sandblasted to kill the surface rust. I would say in my area you'd spend $4000 and up US. $2000 is a great price! Call them up!

I have actually spent some time on it with the orbital, that picture does it no justice, I will be just doing a primer coat this year, nice paint next year. :)

Make sure u use epoxy....expensive but far better than any etch primer!
My 2 cents!

i advised an etch to ensure the rust is at least stopped. Epoxy is great for adhesion but helpless against rust of any kind. If you've sanded the car again, epoxy is the right idea... have fun

Ya, everything is helpless against rust. You can't put epoxy or etch over any rust...it will come back.  Etch is a corrision resistant primer that is usually thinner than epoxy and gets deep into the sand scratches in the metal ( sort of gives the metal more bit) Most paint manufactures supply 2 different etch primers..one being more corrision resistant and thinner than the other. It also provides good adhesion to high build primers...provided you don't wait too long before recoating or you have to sand it. Recoating etch primer is usually ok within a 48 hour period without sanding . You cannot put and etch primer under an epoxy primer...u could very likely have delamination issues. Epoxy provides excellent resistance to corrision and is not as porous as etch...plus you get a little more film build. The adhesion is excellent if the metal is sandblasted and then sanded with 120 grit....or sanded with 80 grit then with 120 grit.
Basically what i'm getting at is that which ever route you chose to go make sure you do a good job of dealing with that flash rust or you'll eventually end up doing it again.
Good luck!
