Missing Anything?
« on: January 01, 2004, 04:19:28 AM »
Here is a pic of the engine of my 71 Beetle. Is there anything missing from it? After looking at the Bentley manuel there seems to be a flat round thing missing from by the dist cap. The pics in the manuel show a vacuum hose going to it. I have a hose coming out of the carb but it is cut and blocked with a screw. Also there is another under the air breather/bath done the same way. Are they supposed to connect to something? I'll look for that image again. If not i'll scan it.

its a vacume advance canister, there is a diaphram in there that uses a vacume signal from the carb to advance the timing (the distributer also has a mechanical advance that advances the timing depending on how fast the distributer shaft is rotating). the distributer that you have on there is a mechanical advance only (such as the 009)...it only uses the distributer speed to advance the timing. a lot of people like the single vacume distributers cause they tend to be a bit smoother (vacume is right there right now when you step on the gas) so the distributer adjusts much quicker, where as the advance only has to spin faster to make any change in the advance curve. ever heard of the notorious 009/34pict3 flat spot?? the vacume distributer also tends to yeild a little better gas mileage (usually about 3-4mpg)...but put that with the motors added smoothness...how can ya go wrong?? hope this helps ya and that someone can add to this. basically your fine running the one you got on there now...just plug the vacume port on the carb with something (rubber cap works well). happy hang overs guys...i mean new years!!

There is one thing on your engine that looks off.  You have a fuel filter before the fuel pump, and its installed backwards!  You should remove this completely.

Thanks allot guys.

As for the fuel filter there is 2 on it. One before pump and 1 after. Actually I thought the one after was supposed to go. Thanks for clearing that up.

Rob

Just went and checked the car and I put the filter back in the same spot again and removed the other one.   D'oh!!!!!
