I have a chance to buy an HID kit for cheap from a buddy of mine. I will probably buy it anyways for my Jetta but since I am driving the Beetle daily now, I was thinking about installing it in there. What do you guys think...65 Beetle with HID's?

I'll be the first (and maybe the only) to ask. What's an HID?

hid's are high intensity discharge lamps. i cant remember exactly how they work but it's something like there is no filament and light is produced from electrodes & gas. (or something like that).

they are very bright and white. and you shouldnt touch the glass with your bare hands or the oil from your skin will ruin the light.

Oh, sorry I should have explained a little better. \"silas\" is correct. These are bulbs with no filaments but instead are filled with Xenon gas. The power going into them are also amplified to make them super bright. Think of a new, higher end BMW or Mercedes. Some of them have those blueish white headlights. Like in the picture...

i plan to put them in my '64.....if i ever convert it to 12 volts.  there a few good write ups on vwvortex.com in the MKIV forums about retrofittings which i plan on doing to my Golf.  other wise, there are kits available instead of sourcing your own ballasts, bulbs and ignitors.  check out Autolampsonline.com or zenondepot.com.

The setup I'm considering is like this one....

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt..._PCN_BIX_Stores

Not a full conversion but rather an H4 setup with bulbs.  I found them doing a search for  (H4 7\")  there ones called Angel Eyes but they would go well with my colour scheme........

thats not recomended.  you will glare oncoming traffic and probably get a VI.  if your gonna run Xenon/HID, you have to run projector housings with a proper cut off.

Piaa HID's are just xenon gas filled bulbs, A true HID kit contains HIGH and LOW beam, separate modules with a light much light street lamps, used in connection with a PROJECTOR stye headlamp that shades the direction of light to the road. There are NO legal kits on the market, but lots of cars have them(as do i)

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!
Offshore imatations are know to cause wiring issues with spiking voltage!!! Can burn up on old wiring!! Be careful with old VW wiring.
The modules have signifigant voltage, Don't play with them(as in take them apart to see how cool the modules are) unless you are very fluent with electronics.)

Keep to good brand names!! Another thing to know is that replacement bulbs range from 100 to 350 each.
**The Number one way for cops to peg you is if you buy the kits that are only one beam!!**
I love mine, I re-ajusted my lights so people would not hate me so much, I would gladly take a ticket and pay it, And just keep them in for the brillant like they do put out! I also built my own shields so other drivers will not kill me! (always think of others because they always hit you)

Check in to calvin ratings anywhere from 3500 to 9000 calvin changes color from white to blue shades.
I have the white 4000 calvin and love where they work at, but i have seen 8000 blue which are very anyoning, And don't work so well in the rain.
Cheers!!

I purchased Piaa star white bulbs for my civic. They  say it operates at 3800k vs a regular halogen 3200k. Extra light with no additional load on the electrical system.

The ballast that operates most HID's are not a simple fixit jobs. Call me simplistic but sometimes its just nice to just see an broken filament in a \"traditional\" bulb and swap it out in a matter of minutes.

In aftermarket applications I guess its a cool way to get more out of the lighting system. In factory equipped cars its sometimes a horror story for your wallet. I remember a friend of mine had a problem with his audi A6 (cant remeber what year) anyhow the HID system failed on him and rather then just replacing 1 component the \"manufacturer\" made it that you must buy the entire system. I think it was 1500 to 1800 dollars later he had his HID system repaired.

I hope they still give new cars the option of having \"regular\" halogen bulbs and HID as an \"upgrade option\"

All I know is that there is a ruling that all new cars must have air pressure sensors on all 4 (even 5 for spare) so if you have 1 fail or 1 gets damaged a friggen valve stem with a sensor will cost 100-300 dollars. Lotsa new devices in the near future. More toys equates to more problems. A cheap halogen bulb is a quick fix but if you have issues with a HID you better limit yourself to \"daytime\" driving because its not a quick trip to lordco or even supermarket for HID parts.

I'm ranting since cars are either getting over complicated for their own good or made to self distruct within 100,000km. Manufacturers will limit on how you can purchase OE replacement parts so that hey make more $$$  HID is probably gonna be one of them to really shrink your wallet.

Its all about personal preference.

Just a little of perspective on color temperatures.

The kelvin unit is the basis of all temperature measurement, starting with 0 K (= -273.16

IMHO, you would want a high intensity arc to produce a color temperature range from 4500 K to 5500 K.

most people make the mistake of running a higher Kalvin bulb.  there is no real usable light beyond 4800K that the human eye can use, and in most cases, the higher K bulbs provide worse lighting, not to mention the retarded looking blue/purple light

Most kits being not legal, lie about Kalvin ratings, the cheaper kits tend to have white light up to 5500
because they really are not 4500 to 5500k

Kinda like compressors
