Sea Blue Or Sea Blue 2?
« on: April 28, 2006, 10:01:15 PM »
Just when I thought I had it figured out, I find that the original L360 code Sea Blue paint that I am repainting my 1965 bug, Also comes in L360 code, Sea Blue 2 !

The original paint code sticker in the spare tire well area has now been cleaned off. Some online auto paint code sites show both Sea Blue and Sea Blue 2. some only have one listed.

The color patches that are shown are to small for me to know which one matches my car.
Anyone out there familiar with this color? here are some pics of my og paint:

No one will be able to tell you anything of any value.  All 'puter moniters and video screens are waaaaay off in their colour calibration.  On top of that, the paint on your car derives it's colour by reflecting light.  A 'puter moniter derives it's colour by emitting light.  It emits different proportions of red, green and blue to make up any colour you want.  Go real close to your TV to see the different colour blocks.  Mixing proportions of R, G, and B is never as accurate as the full spectrum.

The best way to determine your car's colour is to take off an original paint part and take it down to the paint store.  A front hood hinge will give them a nice flat surface to work with.

Sea Blue Or Sea Blue 2?

Thanks Bruce,
I realize the differences with recreating colors on monitors ect but the actual differences between the two colors are quite significant. I was hoping there would be someone out there that went through this same issue, and could save me some hassle.

This is my confusion! The second paint link (Valspar) shows Sea Blue as a darker blue, Kinda like the Sea Blue bus color picture:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_pag...p?pic_id=194882

The Valspar Sea Blue 2 looks like the color of my car. Okay, so that means my bug must be painted with Sea Blue 2, Right?

But then the Samba paint/upholstery pages list just one Sea Blue. This color looks also to be the same as my car and the Valspar colour Sea Blue 2! Kinda a Blue/Turqoise combo. So this means my bug must be painted with Sea Blue right?! WTF!

When I go to the paint store, they list both colors but have no examples so I would like to be sure what I got before It is mixed.

Thanks,

even though your paint store doesn't have the examples, relying on digital photographs really doesn't help you either

because cameras take photos under different lighting conditions, the colors are going to be different every time
i've seen 2 pictures of the same bug, taken in different lighting conditions with a different flash etc, and one looked beige, one looked robin's egg blue
so you can never really trust what a machine shows you, over your own two eyes

have you tried going to a different shop?

This might help
http://autocolorlibrary.com/cgi-bin/search...swagen-pg05.jpg

I checked this color out before I decided on the Gulf blue. I think the sea blue2 was a ghia/type III color but don't quote me on that one ;)

The Sea blue code from PPG #MBC12333a
contains:
m121 GS Blue (GS = green shade)
m128 BS green
m117 black
m119 white
m150 base

The Sea Blue 2 code #MBC12945
contains:
m122 RS blue
m128 BS green
m121 GS blue
M108 red
m119 white
m117 black
m150 base

I say spend the $20 and mix a rattle can of the one you think it is and shoot something to be sure.
I took in a piece to have scanned and it looked the same as yours. We compaired the print out to the codes and it looked most similar to the Gulf blue. Which when mixed Gulf is not even close to Sea blue. But I liked it when I sprayed it out. Go figure
Good luck

That's regular L360. I've never heard of or seen another Sea Blau on a 60's beetle. The same color is on K-Rocs 66 which I did a few years ago.
