Got A New Ride, Red Paint Coming Off And Showing W
« on: March 20, 2007, 05:22:10 PM »
I figure they probably did not sand and primed the car before painting it.

What would be the easiest way to get to the white base to see what i have to work with? Rubbing compound, sand paper with water?

Please see under back window and left tail light for peeling paint.

Any ideas?

Not sure what to do about it, but I've had several repainted VWs that this happened on. :(

Compressed air and a air gun....if that doesn't work....start sanding!

Check the readers ride section on thesamba Emilio. Theres a guy taking down a bus to the original sealing wax red. He's using everything from a flat razer blade to tons of other stuff. Be prepared for a long hard road though if your actually serious about doing so.

i actually got an answer from  Samba. They said , I could use 600 sandpaper with water until I find the white all around. After that I can just buff it.

A good pressure washer is handy for that too. The air gun works as well but not one of those safety ones with the pressure limiter, wear gogs though, flyin bits of paint in the eye suck.  Try a spot with a heat gun and wooden or plexiglass scraper, you never know.

Sanding will work but when you are working on the edge of one of those peely spots you end up sanding too much of the OG paint as well. By the time you are ready to buff the white is gone, especially places like under the windows where it's already thin from time.
