Help
« on: December 24, 2004, 12:50:14 AM »
I know this is a question that is asked very frequently, but for some reason  ( to much Christmas cheer) I can't remember the answer. How do I find out what type of case do I have,as41 or as21, and what is the difference?
My case is a type three, dual relief. does that help?? I can't remember the serial # from the side of the generator stand.

Actually James, for some strange reason, it isn't. I've looked all over the darn thing and can't find any markings that would indicate the case type.
I believe the case # starts with a \"U\"

Anyways, Happy Holidays!

Well..i could be wrong..but my 2007cc motor is an AS21 block..it came from a fuel injected bug..as far as i knew..all AS21 cases were off of Factory FI beetles..i have no idea about type 3s..

in my looking for core blocks..i have found all of the FI cases (no mechanical fuel pump studs or hole in block) have all be AS 21..

in reading the Gene berg tech articals..he claims that the AS21 case is stronger because of a different mag/aluminum mixture used in the casting.

my new motor is being built in an AS 41 case however..

normally it would be labled on the sides of the oil sump..but i have seen cases where this area has been eroded to the point where you can no longer read any of the markings.

i could be wrong. but it has been my understanding that the AS21 is the case everyone is looking for..and i have always found them in fuel injected type 1s.

hope this helps
Cale

It really doesn't make any difference.  You can make just as much hp with either alloy case.  Some might argue that a new AS-41 case would be superior to a 30 year old AS-21.
Both cases can support major hp reliably.
