i notice with my 73 beetle that if i dont pretty much floor it then the car will hop and sputter like its not getting enough gas, especially out of 1st and 2nd gear, and corners where i should be able to go around fine in 2nd gear, the car sputters....any ideas?

engine is stock 1600 dp

Air cleaner off, engine off, look down the throat of the carb.  Open the throttle quickly and watch the small brass tube to see if you get a stream of gas shooting out the end.  If not, it is plugged.

On the right side of the carb tucked up by the choke coil is a small brass hex screw.  Remove that.  It is your idle jet and may be plugged.  Hold it up and look to see if it is.
