i dont know about the rabbit, but here is what i did to get one for my 56 beetle.

send vin #, name of owner (your name), and your complete address to

Stiftung Automuseum VW
Dieselstrabe 35
Brieffach 1003
38 436 Wolfsburg

it costs 15 euro, and i think that equals about 20 us. i sent a money order for 15 euro and got an email from a lady saying that it would cost more to cash the m/o than what it's worth. i ended up sending cash (i know, bad idea to send cash in the mail), but it worked.

try faxing them with your questions.  # (0) 5361 5 20 10

i think there is some more info here  http://www/volkswagen.de/com/maier/vwage.htm.

in no time i received a  nice 8x12 birth certificate with vin #, model, original engine #, colour, options that car came with, date it was made, date it left the factory, and country of destination.

on the 17th of this month, my car will be 48 years old. and on the 20th of this month, it will have spent 48 full years in canada.

i wasnt sure if the link would work, but posted it anyway.

I ordered mine a couple years ago. I sent them a Money Order in German Dutchmarks (sp?)  and they returned it saying that they could not process my request as some files were damaged and could not be saved. A couple weeks later the \"Birth Certificate\" arrived. So it cost me just the price of a postage stamp in the long run. It is now framed on my wall.  :)
