Tire Size
« on: December 04, 2004, 02:04:49 PM »
I need to buy a pair of front tires for a 15x5.5 8 spoke rim by spring for a 72 super. I have 195/60/R15's in the rear. I plan on having the front end dropped, and am wondering what size tire is best to go with. I know most of people stick with 135's, but I've seen people go bigger.  The only reason I'd go bigger is that its tough to find 135's used, and my budget might call for used tires.

Am I going to run into problems going with something bigger than a 135? what's the biggest tire that I can comfortably fit?

Thanks alot!

I have 195/55 15 on the front of my 72 super with adjustable struts and upgraded stiffer springs the tires are 22 \" tall.  On the highest strut setting ( which is 2\" lower than stock)  with a family of 5 in the car I only just touch the fenders if I hit a huge bump, It has to be very big bump to rub.  On the lowest setting ( 4 1/2\" below stock)  My fender hit the tire once when my wife was driving and went over a sidewalk driving very fast, it ripped the fender bead out and also wrecked the tire by cutting right through the cords and side wall.   If I was to do it again I would go with 175/60/15 tire and leave my front end where it is now.  My car sits now at 2\" lower than stock, and with just me in the car the tires have never rubbed.  Only have rubbed with 5 people in it.

with my old 72 super i had 175 60s up front,  they were on 4.5 inch wide chromies, the 175s were very close to touching the spring, so i couldn't  go any wider, with a 5.5 inch rim you could do a 185 or 195 tire up front. i found that skinny tires like a 135 or 165 made the front brakes lock quite easy, a wider tire will help you stop and corner much nicer. especially when its wet out. when you lower your car, you cant go lower then two inches unless you get the bump steer kit, wich is some extra time and $$$ my car was only lowered 2 inches, if you go more your centerlink will be laying on the underside of the car, and your tie rod bars will probably bend up. also another thing you need to do when you lower your car is grind the bottoms of your tie rod ends, cause they will rub on your rim, well they did on mine, wich were 4.5s mind you, your 5.5 inch wide rims might be ok.

I run a 195/60/15 on 15x5.5 rims , on my 74 super I do get a little rub in corners, the struts are adjusted as low as they will go, they do fill the wheel well nicely but I'm going to try and change this set up so there is no rub,
