Meet And Greet
« on: January 09, 2004, 04:36:14 PM »
Hello Gang,

My name is Ben, and I'm from North Vancouver.

In October 2001 that I purchased a 1959 Type 2 Kombi.  It was in non-running condition, and didn't even have an engine.

For the last two and a half years I have been tearing down and rebuilding the bus including stripping the bus right down to bare metal.

Just recently, I've bought an engine (from Kevin \"Billyisgr8\").  It's a Type 4 (details are listed below)  I hope to have the bus painted soon, and complete assembly by the summer of 2004.

I am fairly concerned about passing our emissions test    AIRCARE when it comes time to register the bus, so any help from AIRCARE Guru's in the lower mainland would be much appreciated.

Ben

Here are some of the modifications:

Hey Shane, yeah I remember you!  Too bad about your engine.  Have you rebuilt it?

As you can see, I stuck with a Type IV.  I can't wait till the bus is actually running.

Here are some more pictures of the bus.

I completely disassembled and rebuilt the front beam with Wolfgang lowered spindles and CSP disc brakes.

The rear has been converted to Beetle IRS and fitted out with CSP wide-five drums

Even the front bench has been reupholstered and is ready to be installed after the bus is painted

thats great work you've done.

i've always had a thing for early buses, especially kombi's and panels. that one looks like it will turn out really nice.

what colour are you going to paint it and what type of wheels are you going to roll?

Thanks everyone for the words of support.  It has been a long road to get this bus to where it's at right now.

The original colour of this bus was solid Dove Blue (L31 I believe).  I'd like to have it two toned, with white over blue.

As for wheels, I'm going to stick with the chromed wide-fives that I have on it right now.  I've got the vintage VW hub caps for it too.

I'm going for a bit of a stock look.

Maybe in the future (read: when my wallet isn't empty) I'll get some EMPI polished 5 spokes.  Does anyone know what the offset is with those rims?  The 205/75/ 15 Yokohama AVS ES are a tad too tight to the body work for my liking.

According to AirCare/ICBC: (see www.sva.bc.ca/ICBC/7.6modified.pdf )

A modified motor vehicle means a motor vehicle of a manufacturer's make where an individual has altered:

a) the body of the motor vehicle /snip/

B) any one or more of the following so that they differ from the manufacturer's available original equipment options for the model year of that motor vehicle:
  i)   the chassis :o
ii)  the power train, or
iii) the steering and braking mechanical components

MODIFIED-A - if the vehicle passed inspection and was registered as a specialty or similar vehicle after August 31, 1994.  The exhaust emission standards are those applicable to a 1988 model year motor vehicle of the same weight, engine displacement, and vehicle type as set out in the Exhaust Emission Standards Regulation.

Good News!  I just heard from AirCare that my bus, although currently unregistered, and falling into the MODIFIED-A category need only meet AirCare standards for a 1959 vehicle.  That should be easy. :)

See you on the road in 2004

Hi Gang,

Just a little update.  The engine has been installed in the bus.  The top of the shoud needs a bit of clearancing, and the rear engine mount just had it's brackets fabricated today.

Once that's all done, I'll pull the engine, and finish the last bits of sandblasting before sending it to the paintshop.

ben, your bus is gonna be sick when it's all done. it's so awesome to see folks doing their own work... brings the term \"labour of love\" to a whole new level.

what colour will the bus be?  when are you going to have it painted?  I love seeing buses with fresh paintjobs just out of the booth. :P

Just thought I'd give you guys a little update.  I have been working regularly on the bus, but haven't had a chance to post here.

The underside of the bus has finally all been sandblasted and coated in grey POR-15

The engine has been mounted and removed multiple times to get the clearance just right.  The exhaust has been ceramic coated and is ready to bolt in.

Even the inside has been sandblasted in preparation for painting.

Here are some pictures of the bus after I hung and gapped the doors.

I've arranged for someone to paint the bus in mid August after I plumb the brake lines and finish up on the bumpers.

Does anyone have a tow dolly or flat deck trailer that I could borrow or rent to move the bus from North Van to Maple Ridge? :D
