what gauge is vw steel?
what size wire is good for mig welding? i'm thinking .024 (6mm) is fine.

The thickness of VW steel varies depending on the shape. Where its drawn into complex shapes, it will be thinner. Also older cars have thicker steel. The usual thickness is .8mm
To weld it, use the smallest wire, .6mm is good.

Geoff, if you have .8mm wire in there, you will find it much easier to weld if you step down to .6mm. The bigger wire gives you a much hotter arc, blowing through way easier than with the smaller arc of .6mm wire.
