Airkewlds 2008 Project 1973 Super
« on: December 28, 2007, 07:18:14 AM »
For 2008, I decided to pick up a 73 Super. I looked on eBay one evening and found one. Cars for a cause had it for auction and I picked it up for $455. eBay item # 140187686195 . I was looking for one unmolested in AZ or in Ca and at the price I could not beat it.

My plan is to do a German looker, possibly on air, more than likely later.

17\" boxster s wheels

Front & Rear BAD Series Brakes

euro bumpers paint matched, More than likely from mid america
Topline Maxxi Struts
Creative stock width front fenders with early headlight buckets
HID Headlights

Flat smoked taillights
Smoothed front and rear bumpers, eliminating the bumper bolts from being seen
Early trim
Dual signal mirrors

2609cc Type 1 motor, my father calls it \"the 2\" wider kit\" with 52mm carbs, Chevy HEI distributor, Dual 1\"5/8 custom A1 muffler or dual exhaust, do not know just yet. My father will be building it www.buggyworld.com
Super trans with all new weddle gears also from my father.
Smooth and fiberglassed front dash paint matched
Seats made into low backs with four point cut outs
rear cage, no back seat so audio can be showed off.

More than likely the car will be polar silver with satin black wheels, blacked out glass, pop the engine lid and blow your doors off ride. I plan on doing tech articles and videos on each mod I perform using our parts.

To start, I will make it a driver and test fitter to mock up all that we are going to do. Then we will take the body off and do the chassis and so on.

Here are some before pics

you can get 18\" 7.5 wide twists!

still harder to get them to fit, but it is possible.

Talked to my Dad, www.buggyworld.com , and he just ordered the 94mm crank. So we are going 94x94. It will be about 1.085\" wider on each side.
We are going to go with 51mm Jay cee carbs, redone by my dad. We have a goal of  have 6 quarts of oil running through this motor. External filter, 8 pass oil cooler etc. We are going to call up Tiger @ A1 to make us up a muffler to fit the beast as well. We are installing bus CV's and axles along with chromoly axles and cups on the trans. kafer cup bar as well. I just received the rear hubs off of a 944 Porsche that are steel centers so they will be able to take the abuse. We are going to develop a Vented set of BAD Brakes for the car as well with front and rear Wilwood calipers. Should be good. Talked to John at Topline, he just sent us the Maxxi Struts, Sway bar and Eccentrics for the alignment on this car. I have been having trouble finding the wheels, got one from ebay, talked to many people about those wheels and they all have their eyes peeled. Thats it for now, I will be in touch sooner than later.

Well, we got Super Badd in our possession. Its a solid Original VW but has the standard problems of neglect.

We need to change out the four fenders with non dented versions. The hood will be replaced and we plan on changing out the rear decklid with a 67 or what ever does not have the vents on the rear. The bumpers will be smooth cal look bumpers with turn signals, and i thing we will reshape the factory fenders in the front to give them an earlier look. I have looked at the handles and I am going to redo all the handles with speed holes and made out of billet aluminum. Should be quite cool.

We got the coil overs today along with the lowered swaybar.

This stuff is of pretty high quality and I am now offering it on my website.  It will lower the car up to 6 inches. So that, with the 17's, with 40 series tires, it should be pretty close to terra firma.

Hey Pete,
For that BIG of a motor 6 quarts is a must. Use the Berg or Empi Copy wide deep sump and ditch the 8 pass oil cooler for a real one, Mesa or Strap. As well....what brand of crank and case are you using? 94mm  stroke is huge! a 90mm fits inside a stock case with some major cam clearance. Sounds like it will be a monster!

Thanks for posting Geoff. I am not handling the motor aspect of it too much, so I will let my old man handle that. Demello is making the crank for us. I will shoot some pics of the assembly.

We changed up the wheels because I could not pass up the deal on eBay.

We received some new body panels for it.
drivers side front

We think an NOS hood

Right rear fender

and a 69 decklid that has no vents at the top of the lid. It should smooth it out some. We might remove the vents out of the factory one and install them behind the license plate, more to come later.

We should start installing some parts this week. Videos and tutorial to happen shortly. Got to get it going for Copperstate.

how hot do the HIDs get?  I've been toying with that swap, but haven't yet because of the heat concerns.  (fiberglass fenders with early sealed beams currently)

Exactly what happened. I was on my way to the show, got about 2 miles away and it gave out.  Came back home, tried to fix but on a couple hours of sleep, no dice.

why yes they are but with a 5x100mm bolt pattern.

Thanks for the comments. Paint will come in late fall after I get the roll cage, and the 2609CC beast in it.
