My Ghia's 1600 combo it has been said is original to the car. In reverse the tranny was 'very' noisy, the one time I have driven it. It kind of sounded like a tractor, really sort of like\" arrrgggghhiiiaaaa\". I won't say it was grinding exactly, that is the car went backwards and everything, it didn't sound like there were missing teeth or anything, I mean it wasn't clunking. When I drove the car up from Seattle, it ran smoothiy enough in all 4 gears at high speed forward. I have been told by a friend that the transmission is \"original and mated to the motor\". Does this sound like a abearing?Could it be that little shaft? Or could it just neeeeeeed adjustment somehow? Maybe changing the transmission fluid will help? Any comments appreciated. I have found that reverse in the VW transaxle, is always a bit noisy. You get a sort of a gear whine/howl. I think it's because reverse uses two sets of straight cut gears, versus the other four gears, that use one set of helical gears. I guess it's possible that a bearing could be failing, but highly unlikely, since most of the time, the reverse bearings are spinning with no load. Reverse is the weakest gear in the VW trans. It is a \"convenience gear\", so you don't have to get out of the car, and push it backwards. As long as the trans is not popping out of reverse gear, drive it easily, and enjoy it.

How long has that car been sitting? Probably would not hurt to change the gear oil.

Steve, you've heard the sound all of us know. That's because all VW transmissions make that noise. As long as that trans does not pop out of reverse while you are backing up, it is good.

That brings up another point. Make sure you are absolutely dead stopped before moving the lever into R. Even if you are rolling back slowly, stop it before your shift into reverse. Then when you back up, give it the minimum amount of throttle as necessary. Reverse gear on the late transmissions is very weak. I avoid backing up whenever possible. For example, when you park at the mall, find a double length spot and pull through so you can leave without backing. Backing up a hill is to be avoided if possible.

Definitely change your gear oil. There's another job for a newbie like yourself. You have the orange Bentley, right?

Hi Gutterslug and Bruce. You guys rock. I get it, Orange Bentley. I have a Haynes on loan from a friend which seems good. No$$$ for books right now, out of work sort of. Well, I have some hours, just not much. Just paid property taxes. Ouch. Yeah the gear oil I can do. What gear oil? Special? What weight is it? Can I get some bulk somewhere? How much? Don't overfill I know. Story is car is parked. Engine is out. Working on it very slowly, mostly cleaning and talking so far. Hey, does anybody know, about the seat upholstry? There seems to be little pointy clips that are part of the frame of the seat holding the vinyl on, do you just bend those up to get it off, or will they break off? I could bend them back with a pair of needle nose pliars, but are you supposed to? Maybe ther is just a trick to getting it off. Looks primitive as my dad would say. I can't tell, but there is also a ridge along the side of the rail that seems to be holding the fabric in place. Don't see how that comes off. Oh, don't know if there is a forum for upholstry, maybe I should be asking in there. Oh, and what thread could I use to sew this old vinyl? Probably nylon or polyester or something I guess. Advice? Anybody have a vynly repair kit? Oh well, I will look on ebay.

That is so way cool about the tranny. Honestly I thought I had huge problems there. It sounded like a scalded cat to me. Yeah, sure one thing off my mind for sure, I do tend to obsess about stuff. If, if if if if and when and if I ever do get it on the road I won't worry about the tranny. Like I said the forward motion was smooth as silk, when on the flat. Ido have a clutch question though. When I brought the car up, my one and only driving experience in it, I had to go up a steep ramp on the ferry. I had to dump the clutch two or three times as I recall to get up the steep short incline. Of course, it was cold, bitterly cold. the motor was cold, the cluthc cold, etc. Also, I can't remember if the motor was running on all four. So it could have been that. But does the cluch have any controls or adustments other than that funny turning thumb screw? Thanks, Peace man. Steve.

Those \"clips\" are called hog-rings. They hold the upholstery to the seat frame. Just cut 'em off and toss 'em. You can buy new ones at an auto parts store along with the hog-ring pliers for dirt cheap. They're basically not worth saving for the price they're worth.

no they are not the hog-rings they are metal spikes welded to the frame,

when i did my seats i just bent them up with needle nose pliers with no problems, the metal it very soft, and none of them broke.
