GCVW Aircooled Judges - Thank YOU!
« on: August 05, 2013, 10:52:42 AM »
One of the biggest challenges to the organizers each year is getting enough Judges for the Aircooled Classes. We do get some volunteers, but definitely need more. The volunteers we do get are taxed to the max trying to get through each and everyone of the classes, and its incredibly difficult to ensure that no mistakes are made through the process. This is your show and we really need help making sure your cars are judged well. In order to have traditionally judged classes, we need a minimum of 15 volunteers, confirmed by August 20th There are 24 Aircooled classes, and the absolute minimum number of judges needed is 15. The ideal number of volunteers is 19. Some of the classes are very large, so we need to divide and conquer at the show.

Here's how it's going to work for 2013
We're hoping for a team of volunteers, so that we can do our usual judged classes where each car is scored on our judging sheets. The volunteer judges will get a free lunch at BJ's Hot Dog stand, as well as a Show T-Shirt. If we don't get the minimum 15 volunteers we are going move to a 'selection committee' for the classes. Cars will still be judged, but the amount of time spent in each class will be less. I know we've got a great community of enthusiasts, so I suspect we'll have fifteen to nineteen volunteers.

What you need to be a judge

1) Willingness to devote about an hour of time walking through and looking at the class of cars.
      - Judges get the best view, when you walk up with a clipboard the crowd parts and you really get to check out all the bits you wanted to see. We try and divide up the classes so you might be doing two or three smaller classes, or one large class in your hour of time.

2) Willingness to spend 20min tallying your scores.
      - As you judge each car, you're simply circling numbers from 1 to 5, and maybe adding some notes for yourself as you go. At the end of your session, before handing in your clipboard we simply need you to add up each car's score and write it at the top corner. This allows us to quickly tally up classes and figure out the top cars. We have a nice shaded tent with chairs to give you a break while you do this.

What you don't need

A) Expert detailed experience with every possible detail.
     - In an ideal world, each class would be judged by someone who knows every minute detail of the class, could tell if a fender was OE or repop from 50 feet away and knew if that taillight was mounted 6mm too far to the left. But hey, we're not quite at concourse judging yet. Cars are evaluated on basic standards such as "Paint", "Interior", "Engine", etc.  We always take requests for class judging, so if you know a lot about Standard beetles before '67 (and don't have one in the class), we'll probably have you judge that class.

How do I volunteer?

- Send a PM to me, owdlvr (Dave Hord).
- Send an email to spokes@the-wire.com
- Send a text to 604 902 1595

Let me know your name, Airspeed user name and if you have a particular class you want to judge. For obvious reasons, you aren't allowed to Judge your own class, but volunteering to Judge for other classes will ensure we are able to do a traditionally judged show for 2013.

Hey Dave, I know it's a little late but if you still need some aircooled judges me and my wife would be happy to help. Have a pretty wide range of knowledge from bus to bug. Have helped with parking in the past. As well I am registered for type 1 convertible custom.

Awesome! Yes we could definitely use you :-)

Anyone else who'd like to volunteer simply needs to meet me at the main tent for 11am. We'll divide up the classes and head out to do some judging.

I just wanted to post up a HUGE thanks to those of you who volunteered to Judge. We had volunteers in advance, at the show, and when I was one person short (for a class I know ZERO about), I approached an expert and the first word out of his mouth was "absolutely". It was unreal. Honestly, the least stressful year for Judging (that I've been involved in), and it gave us the time to really pay attention to each of our classes.

I'm sure (we always do), that over the next few days we'll hear about how some improvements could be made, or why one car won and another didn't...but if you were a Judge, please take to heart that I think you did an incredible job...and you took the part I hate most about the show, and made it enjoyable for me.

Thanks again,

Out of curiosity how was the watercooled section judged?, I've had a few Emails wondering and don't know where to look for clues.

Props to all who stepped up for the aircooled classes, if I didn't have to work in the PM I would have joined the crew.

Well no....that covers the basic criteria for judging but where do the judges come from?, there was a callout for aircooled judges here on the ASF but I must have missed the watercooled one, was there a similar request made on a watercooled forum or through a club?. I'm not on a witch hunt, just curious how the WC set does it and what kind of turnout and demographic steps up?

Well, to be perfectly honest. No idea on Watercooled!  The watercooled judging is organized by the Dub-Allstars group, and I believe they do their callouts on the Dubberz forums.
