one piece side glass?
« on: January 09, 2013, 08:59:31 PM »
ive heard this is a common swap. I have a 70 bug that I am putting together & am curious if anyone has done the swap. cip has a kit with glass that seems pretty cheap{made by bugpack}. im also wondering if anyone has experience with weatherstrip & window rubber kits? im not building a perfect car but it has been taken down to bare metal & etch primed so I will need all the rubber parts...is cips stuff good enough quality? any input is appreciated

if i could only go back! i did this mod when i was a young pup and i dont recommend it.the windows always rattle when you close the door, they dont fit the windlacing correctly and even after upgrading to the best snap in seals sold you have to rely on glue to hold the foward part of the seal. also you can see where seal retension clips are on the strip (little bumps, not smooth).although replacing the factory no drafts and seals can be pricey, it is a much better end product especially when you roll up the window and the parts stay in place. the only thing i like about this conversion is the look, now that my beard is grey i much prefer function!

Dont do it .I fitted one pc windows to my 66  ten yrs ago and I've hated them since day 1. They rattle and don't always close properly , sometimes it takes two hands to get them closed.
Fix or use the originals , you'll be way happier  IMO.

ditto... had them on a car I bought and disliked them throughout the whole time I owned it. Leaks, hard to crank, wind noise... I contemplated trying to put normal vents back in, but it would have been a nightmare.

I absolutely loved 'em...for the first week.

Any closer then 20ft, and you could see that the seals weren't up to factory specs. I tried two different sets, and they still looked bad. I loved driving with 'em all the way down, arm out the window...until they needed to go up. Anything faster then 60kph and you needed two hands, one to crank the window up and the other hand to pull the glass into the car.

If they were down, and you were moving, they were rattling. Had to tear apart the door and add felt padding in multiple places.

And seals going across the bottom? Snap-in, glue-in, snapped in with glue...didn't matter, they all peeled away from the door.

wow,im glad I asked. I guess I will just order whats needed for weatherstripping & seals for regular vents. anyone have good luck with weatherstrip & glass seals from cip? I would like to delete the chrome strips in the seals.

they do offer slightly better visisbilty.... still, i wouldn't reccomend them.

also, if you're a smoker, you won't like them in the rain or cool days. someone here knows what i'm talking about!

in all my years doing bug's I have only ever seen one set decently installed. Steve Wilson's 63 bug, and i think he spent like........750 hours to make em right. (even he changed his doors last year to go back to stock so they are gone now....)
