Fix my 87 Vanagon, please!
« on: October 15, 2009, 09:48:52 PM »
I am looking at an 87 Vanagon 2wd.  It has a blown head gasket.  It's located in Maple Ridge.  I have a few questions...

Does a blown head gasket mean new heads too, or machining?  Does it mean the engine could be damaged?  apparently it will run, but he hasn't run it for more than about 30 seconds.
Anyone know how much it will cost to fix?  Parts/Labour?
Anyone know a good shop near east maple ridge or mission?
Better yet, is anyone on here able to do this job for me? cash

all the mobile mechanics i know stick to skoda and trabant. ocasionally they might work on a slant six, but only if its spark plugs. and even then its dicey, maybe, if your if your a friend of the family. maybe.

on a more serious note. here in the south okanagan, i know of 2 guys that will touch a van. and one of them will only do it when he desperatley needs money, which isn't very often.
so basic supply and demand theory suggest that with lots of vanagons, and few willing mechanics decrees "mucho denaros".
so my advice to you is pay what they ask, and be thankfull you've found somebody willing to fix a vanagon. or learn.
but thats here in the sunny okanagan, not the coast. good hunting! ;)
the customer is always wrong

Doesn't need to be a professional mobile mechanic, just someone who knows how to fix it, and wants to make some cash...
Recommendation for a good, honest shop in the area also appreciated...
