This one is my KEEPER!
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:34:04 AM »
For those that don't know I sold our Riviera Camper at Christmas time.  Even before it sold I was on the lookout for a 15 window and after 6 months of looking I found one.  It was for sale for less than 2 hours and I was lucky as the first in line couldn't fund it.  After all the hoopla of transporting a bus up from the States it arrived in mid February.  Amazingly solid and relatively untouched, (it had been sitting for close to 20 years).  Sometime in the mid '70's it was stripped of it's interior,  :'(  fitted for function as a Heating & Cooling company rig, and painted two tone green.  It later parked and ended up in a salvage yard for unknown reasons.  There is was slowly stripped of it's deluxe trim and trinketsl. In the early 90's it bought by Lind off the Samba and brought to his yard later to be sold to the gentleman I purchased it off of.  He had a grand vision of putting a deluxe roof clip on it making it a 23 window but luckily never actually brought out the tools to do so.  It sat, along with several other VW's on his property for close to 15 years before he decided to give it up.

That's about all the history I've been able to dig up on it thus far but I do know it spent it's early life in California (see picture below).  For the last month or so I've been slowly and painstakingly removing the two tone green to reveal the original Sealing Wax Red/ Beige Grey paint below.  Keeping the logos as a tribute of the buses history is the hard part but so far well worth it.  As for plans the bus will remain in the original paint, touched up and blended where bare metal is showing, and put back on the road where it belongs.

On to the pictures:

The beginning of a very long process

Dressed it up to help get motivated.

WAY TOO COOL to find this inside the bus

That brings you all up to speed as of yesterday.  Hope you like it and can't wait to bring it down to show it to you in person.  I'll keep you updated as often as I can.  Back to work now.......

It's a December 1959 15 window and yes Bruce at times I think I'm nuts too.  In fact my wife is certain of it.

Todd,
That's such a fantastic score man. You've done an amazing job of bringing back the SWR and preserving those cool logo's. Can't wait to cruise with you. I may be awhile though.
Cheers!

Okay, well it's been a long time since I updated this thread.  Mostly because of lack of time but this week has been a busy one.  I have yet to attack the roof and still want to go over the side one more time to work out some more scratches from when it was painted green.  Here he is so far.  Pictures don't do it justice but you can see the crazy reflection in a few of the pictures.

No Jason it won't make it to the GCVWS this year.  Not enough time in the day to shuffle sports, family, work and the bus this year.  Truth be told, I just refuse to rush this one for a deadline.
