looking for:

78-84 mm forged / welded (no cast) crank with wedemated lightened flywheel...new or used, must be in great condition

90.5 mm stroker P&C, must also be in great shape, with rings

stroker rods (Let me know what you have)

dual port 40x35.5, 42x37.5, 44x37.5, or something similar, in great condition, with little or no porting, must be clean and bored for 90.5's

also looking for external oil cooler and fan, full flow kit, sump, and merged header.

Dont know of any quality used parts for sale (be very careful when buying used performance parts) We have 82 and 84 wedge mated Cranks in stock as well as everything else your looking for. If you do buy used have someone who knows what their looking at check them out before you put down the cash. Ask James about used perf cranks.

When I was building my drag only bug I purchased an 88mm Scat crank as I was building a 2442 - I got a kickass deal on it - as it turned out after having it inspected by a machine shop it had various micro cracks etc...
Visually it looked perfect but a proper inspection is in order when you need to know for sure. (kinda like buying used heads right)

Turned out to be an expensive lesson - I ended up trading the crank for a set of engine tin and a Johnny Lightening 66 beetle set to Joe down in Oregon (wasserboxer guy, does machine work) he is going to run it in a "grenade" buggy engine and see what happens.

Don't even ask what a 88mm crank is worth....

James is correct.
I have a forged, wedgemated Gene Berg 82mm crank with about 10,000 miles on it.
When I worked at Finning, I put it in the Magnaflux machine at work just for shits & giggles.
Low and behold if there wasn't hairline cracks in the corner of the rod journals.

I sent it down to Bergs (Cameron took it down for me) for them to check for themselves as they had never
seen this before in one of their forged cranks. Sure enough they saw the hairline cracks.
Gene figured it was due to running too high compression with "low octane" gas.
It may have been possible, but I was only running 8.5 to 1 compression and was using Chevron Supreme
94 Octane pump gas. It never pinged or detonated as far as I could tell, but the valve guides did "fall out"
of the heads after ~ 7,500 miles.

In any case, the crank looks pristine to the naked or magnified eye, and you would never know it has
hairline cracks unless you had it magnafluxed.

I plan on re-using this crank in my 1995 anyway, as the cracks are soooo fine it most likely won't affect
the life of this motor.

Buyer beware, this includes new stuff too, as there is some real junk out there - my first 82mm crank
was a cast one...... don't ask!

What a load of crap!  I've run 87 octane in my 8.5:1 engine for over 30,000 miles.  There's no way any 8.5:1 engine could ever ping on 94.  

That's similar to the response Bugpack gave to Terry when his BP crank broke.  They said they've never heard of one of their cranks breaking.  Terry thought that was odd, because he's had 2 of theirs break.  I bet if you talk to them today they'd probably say they haven't heard of it happening.


If it were my crank, I'd highlight the area where the crack is then send it to DMS and have it welded.  Be better than running it broken like it is.

you think thats weird?...i called CB performance to find out about their Race nitrided crankshaft.  I finally got passed around to this lady and she was telling me that their cranks are made in China and that you dont need a nitrided crank if you run under 8K rpm.  I thought that was weird, wasn't it always Bob Tomilinson that says dont buy scat cuz they buy forged cranks from china?  I am confused....are all forged cranks now made in china?

No not all cranks but the majority of cranks are, The ones that are out there today all seem to come from one supplier in China and people just sell them under their name. These are very good cranks for the price. If you want to have the crank wedgemated and use it for heavy duty race ...strip street action then having it nitrated would be a good idea just for added strength. (but it is not needed)

We have sold many of these cranks and have never had any fail or heard anything bad about them....(besides one in the very begining where a rear bearing got pinched on it due to a larger radius on the bearing/cheek area (this makes the crank stronger in that area) all that was needed was to clearance the bearing.

Yeah, I take everything from Bergs with a grain of salt. although the things in their tech tips do sound logical.
I think they have a tendency to go over-board..... otherwise why would Cameron be building a 2443 nitrous breathing monster ?      

I bought my crank back in 1981 and I believe it was made in Sweden. It has the Type4 center main bearing
with Porsche rod journals, so it should have been stronger than a VW journal crank. I did rev it to 8,300 RPM
quite regularly - (that's all the dual springs could handle).
