Can a Canadian Buy register and insure a car in the states?

I was wondering if any of you guys or gals had a vehicle registered or insured in the states? Say for use at a holiday home or such like? Or knows if it is in any way possible to do this?

I'm pretty sure you have to provide proof of property ownership in the US.

So renters can't register a car in the USA?

I registered one approx 2 years ago using a PO box address, they just want somewhere to mail the title to. I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure I used my Canadian address under owner.

No problems, paid the fees and wait 2 weeks, did it at booth at the grocery store in Blaine.

Yup, ya can, but...........................

We locals frown on it as it the practice typically promotes visitors from the north country. And some of those said visitors/drivers are sometimes worse than our Local DWOs  :o

As I recall the problem lies in coming into Canada with it. There is (or at least was) a law against a Canadian driving an American registered car in Canada. Fine used to $200-250. I think this was to prevent a Canadian resident from saving money on car & insurance by leaving it registered in the USA. You can definitely insure it to drive in the US till you get home. Wayne
