Question For Bruce
« on: January 18, 2005, 05:40:53 PM »
Mr Tweedle
I have a question about my bus tranny. I'm swapping bellhousing and pilot shafts so I can use the 200 mm  clutch (1600) and fly wheel . My trouble is that I can not seem to remove the 79 input shaft , the reverse gear collar    hit the diff before i can get the shaft to unscrew is there some thing that I am missing.

  Thanks,  Don

Well I'm not Bruce but.....I just did an 002 and it was really close while putting the shaft in after the diff. I think I had to turn the diff so that the collar lined up with a hole in the diff then wiggle and giggle it a bit as I threaded it on.  I've also heard of people just cutting off a little from the end of the shaft. I guess if all else fails just mark the diff side collar , then back it out untill the diff is loose enough for you to get the shaft out. Then turn the side collar back to where it was. Hope that helps.

Are the 091 input shafts a different length than 002's ?

I don't know.  I don't do Bus transmissions.

Hans, that T3 trans was a 10 tooth first gear.  It had a 73 and up front mount.

Hey DBD,  head over to the bay window forums at thesamba.com.  The pool is  a little deeper over there, you're bound to find what you're looking for.

Hey thanks for the replies. the 79 input shaft is just a bit longer and Im not sure if the 200mm clutch disk will fit so I dont think I can just cut it, besides I may need it for a type four motor later on.  I have been wiggling, pulling and turning on that shaft for  over a week now and I still can,t get it off   geez!

Sorry If I got your name wrong Bruce. I guess I'll try those samba guys

thanks  Don

Thanks for the info Tom.
DBD , the 200mm disc would fit the 091 shaft but your right , you may not be able to use it on a bus motor after cutting it.  So , what you'll have to do is remove both CV joint cup's or drive flange's. Remove the plastic lock plate from drivers side only. Carefully mark the position of the diff adjusting ring(I called it a diff side collar above)  Turn it out untill the diff is loose enough for you to slide the reverse collar up and remove the shaft. Put the new shaft on with the 091 reverse collar and snap ring.  Return the diff adjusting ring to it's original position etc etc . You will now need new cv flange cap seals but it may also be a good time to change the oil seals in the diff adjusting rings.
