Carb Sync..need Help. One Butterfly Out. ?
« on: June 14, 2004, 08:46:14 PM »
well, i have been hard at setting up my car today..with the help of scratchy..we got the run on problem fixed..so i moved onto setting up the linkage once and for all..ran into some problems along the way..but fixed them all but one..

i have the car where i want it to idle.. the 1/2 TB butterflys read 5 on my snail sync..the #4 butter fly reads 5 on the money..but the #3 reads 3 1/2
i checked for vacume leaks..and found none..so i took out the feeler gauges and a mirrior and took a good look at all the butterflys..

the #3 butter fly is more shut then all the others..you can see it with the naked eye.. now what would one do to fix a problem like this?
machine the butterfly? or is it something that can be adjusted out some how?

i want this thing to run perfect..so i will do what it takes to get it done right.

any ideas?

thanx
Cale

I just has similar \"issue\" with some IDA's and loosened the throttle plate screws, removed them one at a time, cleaned them, applied some Loctite, reinstalled them and tightened while holding the throttle closed firmly. It seemed to re-center the plates and allowed them to both close completely. Try it \"you never know!\" wayne

What kind of carbs are these?

If they are IDAs,  I have seen many that have the throttle plates a bit off from each other.  What I do is turn the carb over and slowly open it until you can just see the edge of the first progression hole, then look at the other one.  If one is more advanced than the other, you can correct it by twisting the throttle shaft.  Take all the gear off both ends and get two crescent wrenches.  Clamp them down tight on the flats and give it a tweak.  Check your progress.  I've seen others put a couple of layers of cloth over the jaws of their water pump pliers and grab on over the brass throttle plates.  You have to be careful this way not to bend the throttle plates.

Hey Bruce, the subject line is mis-leading. They are actually $5000 CB Performance Fuel Injection
throttle bodies...      ]:(

For $5000, I'd expect them to be perfect (this price actually includes the Turbo Kit as well).
In any case, Cale found a burr left over from stamping out the butterfly. Once this was removed
it closed correctly. As Sharkey says, you get what you pay for, and for $5000, you don't get
a lot from CB Performance. Although the layout and design is very good, the fit and finish
of this kit is just awful. It takes a lot of checking and customizing to make it work.

Now if only Cale can keep the rotor resistor from blowing up, he might have a reliable motor that
pulls like a Semi Tractor
