EMPI GT STEERING WHEEL
« on: July 04, 2012, 04:44:02 PM »
Anyone have any literature from the old days showing when the EMPI GT wheel first came into production?

A customer of ours is trying to get collector plates for his beetle and ICBC objected to the Flat 4 GT steering wheel and the BRM wheels (copies).   A quick google search shows the first BRM's were manufactured in 1966 so prooving that the wheels are period correct isn't a problem.  I need similar information for the original steering wheel.  My guess is they came into existence in the late 60's to early 70's.

Cheers

Rob

The GTV wheel was out before 1970, I don't have my EMPI catalogs handy but I think it was a few years before that.

Frankfurt auto show 1969, shows the later version that was for 68 up

Here's a shot from the 68 catalog showing the "Universal" it was basicly the GTV but with a hole and a slot in each of the three spokes.

i totally agree i thought i saw em once in the same ad as a brm wheel, so im thinking around 66 67 but none the less its something stating a year along with a photo of the wheel, i think thats all icbc needs, unless they are so picky you need it to be from the year of the car only, then in that case that sucks!!

side note, geoff you need a imp... just putting it out there!

What year is the guy's car?

Going by memory it's a 1965 or maybe 1966 at the latest.
