40hp questions
« on: February 17, 2011, 11:10:17 AM »
I've converted an old 40hp engine to 12v and now have a few questions.

1. The carb (28pict) doesn't fit. It hits the generator. I assume a spacer is needed?

2.  Is the electric choke on my 28 pict going to be a problem? I do have a 30 pict with a 12v choke on it.

3. Can i still use the stock points in the distributor?

4. I bought a replacement 40hp muffler that doesn't seem to fit. The j-tubes won't fit into the muffler. 1-3/8 od j-tubes. 1-5/16 muffler flanges. Any ideas on how the stretch the flanges to 1-3/8?

5. There didn't seem to be an gasket between the intake manifold and the head. Is this normal?

1. Try fitting it again.  See if you can grind a notch in the generator to make it work without the spacer.  If you use the spacer, it raises the air cleaner so high that it interferes with the hood spring.

I'd bet that the 6V choke heater element would burn up on 12V
