The Dawson Creek wind turbines
« on: February 13, 2010, 02:44:13 PM »
Hey all. Just thought I'd fire up a few pics I took today of the big Wind Generated Turbines up here in Dawson Creek. Man are these things some impressive pieces of engineering! I don't know how I'd like to be the poor bastard who has to crawl up the ladder inside one of these to maintain them though!  lol_hitting
What an eerie feeling standing under one of these giants while it's moving though! WOW!
If ya look close, at the bottom of one of these pictures there's me at the base of one. Now, I'm 6'5" so I'm not a midget by any means so you can sorta guess how freakin' HUGE these things are. I'm guessing one of the blades on these things is about 50-60 feet long. I could be wrong but after seeing one, that'd be my guess. If I counted right there were 28 of these things but I could be wrong... that was a few hours ago!  lol_hitting

Look at that cute little powerline pole (to the right)
How's that for a size scale?

Nice pics. Just looking at the pics I would have to say those are the small series turbines. They usually come with 65 foot blades and the tower would be about 135 feet. I was under the large series turbines in Ireland a few years back. They stand 235 feet and have blades 100 feet long. Quite the sensation listening to the blade go whooshing by your head :o

Great Canadian technology. Designed and built in Sidney B.C. right here on the island

I was up there dozens of times for that project, the company I used to work for did all the concrete for the bases.... Nice to see them erect!
