Green oil light came on :(
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:45:26 PM »
Just looking for a wee bit of insight into this problem. Driving home today and noticed the oil light flickering :-\  I took out the good old IDIOTS GUIDE just to see what it said to do about this problem... First off.... straight to fridge for a beer :P..... Checked oil level and its perfect.... Then the guide said to test the frikkin oil pressure send unit..... only problem is..... IT`S NOT THERE?????? WTF???? I was sure it`s supposed to be beside the base of the dizzy... NO???? I took out the oil pressure relief valve and it looks good... gave it a good clean and replaced it.... Light still comes on ONLY when you bring the revs up... GAWD... It`s driving me crazy:S where the hell is the oil pressure sending unit????? UGH!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing type 4 in a bus? The sender is down in the tin just forward and towards the middle of the engine from the distributor, look for a single wire heading down into the tin. Does the light come on when you turn on the key with the engine off? then go out when you start it?

Flickering at idle after a highway run on a warm day is normal for a type 4, coming on when you rev it is not (sure it's the oil light and not the gen light?). You may want to do an oil change and check the screen, find the sender and try grounding the wire from it, does the same light you are seeing come on?.

sorry.. should have mentioned it`s a 1600. It`s in the GF`s DC.. The light dosnt come on when you turn the ign on either it`s just coming on when you rev it up. I also changed the oil and checked the screen as well. I will get Tarrah to put some pics later when she gets home. The weird thing is I dont think it`s a T1 case as there is no case ID #`s under the alt stand :S

Yep, looks like a type 3 case, find the blue wire with green dots or stripes on it in the harness coming up from the right and see if it goes anywhere. I'm still thinking you've never had an oil light and what you are seeing indicates charging problems.

So does a type 3 case not have an oil sensor?

Figured out why my light was flickering...
The green and blue wire that goes to the green light isn't attatched to anything. It was actually grounding out to the top of the generator.
Loose blue and green wire was found.. and tucked and taped out of the way.. No light now.

Sensor.. still didn't find one.. spent last night in the dark carport under my truck with a flashlight.. It's NOWHERE. Eventually I'll be putting a new 1600 in, so I'll leave it for now I guess.

Wow, no sensor, that's not good. The type 3 had a sensor in the side of the oil cooler, odds are your's does not as the wire's taped up. Easy to add the sensor hole when the engines apart, but a pretty challenging job when it's together and running.

Check your oil religiously and join BCAA :-\

Haha.. been a BCAA member since 97 when I got my first aircooled vw..lol..
Yup.. tow truck number in cel phone.. and am almost too observant when it comes to 'odd' sounds. No stereo for the past 18 months.. Gotta love vw music. ;)

But yes.. planning on replacing the engine over the next year, so no.. not going to bother getting a sensor installed. Just life.. Hmm.. I could find a cute little sticker to put over the green light area..  ;D
