i'm going to assume we're talking about a type 1 here....the vin wont give you a paint code.

if your car has been re-painted, your best bet is to pull off a door panel or rear quarter panel and look at the inners to see some original paint. there is more than likely original paint hiding in some deep crevice of your car, you just need to look to find it.

once it's found, take a good picture of it and reference this list....

...or post the pic here and we'll help identify it.

another way is to get ahold of the stiftung auto museum in germany and get a birth certificate for your car. pretty cool piece of paper that will tell you build date, shipping date, destination port, colour, and add-ons, etc....

i got one for my oval and it's a pretty cool thing to have imho.

good luck. B)

unfortunatley, i dont have the time to dig through a couple pages of your posts to find pics. you'll have to provide a link or repost the pics. ;)

no problem. it's easy. it just takes a few minutes with the right links to websites with the info.

on a side note, the reason i prefer thesamba.com colour charts over the wolfsburgwest colour charts is that most of the colours on thesamba.com charts have an actual picture of a car painted the correct colour. it makes it easier to match rather than trying to make out the exact colour of the wolfsburgwest colour patches.

what's even funnier....if you click on thesamba.com charts and look at the pic that accompanies the first colour listed (L41 black), you'll notice a certain local in the posters avatar.

that's what i was thinking at first too, but if you look at the different model numbers...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/m...modelstype1.php

...you'll notice that model 151 & 152 are verts.

good question.

i dont know, but i'm sure our resident paint & body experts lanny or slammedbus (jason) or some other local will chime in with where to get it.

good luck ;)
