Timing With 009
« on: October 04, 2005, 06:27:51 PM »

I did the static timing and the engine idles great, and responds very well. However, My hearing is not that great. Now, I have read that it should be set differently and it does continue running when I shut down. The engine is not overheating.

NOW, This is how I understand that I should do t:
Take the pulley to TDC, Then move it counter-clockwise 10cm, Loose the nut holding the distributor and take the center cable from distributor cap and hold it 1/4\" from the left side of the carburetor, torn the distributor clock-wise and then turn back until blue spark is shot out of the cable into the side of the carburetor.

Typically the best way to time a 009 would be to use a timing light, and time it at full advance(rev the motor up till the distributor stops advancing, and time it at about 32 degrees) if your just trying to time it enough to start the motor for the first time i usually just stick the motor at tdc and point the rotor at the #1 marking on the distributor

WTF? as Danny would say! 10cm is way too far. If you are using a continuity test light, and a stock pulley, with one notch, the light should come on when the notch aligns with the case. If you are using the stock pulley with two notches, the light should come on when the right notch aligns with the case.

Go to your local library, and find a Haynes or Bentley repair manual. Read up about how to set your ignition timing.

It's an insane world out there... and I'm proud to be part of it!

Airspeed carries the bentley manual - buy that one as you will need it over and over again, it's the best on out there.
