« on: October 10, 2010, 05:40:09 PM »
I have just got a 1968 Beetle and would like to figure out what size engine is in the car. There is an engine code that is situated just below the generator/alternator the number is B 249-940. Can someone help me.
Thanks JP

Unless you got it from the original owner and are absolutely sure it's never been apart the only way to find out is dismantle and measure, many things happen during rebuilds.
Either way tune up parts and specs depend on the carb and distributor that's currently installed, not the displacement.

B 249-940.
There shouldn't be a dash in the middle of the number string.  Is that something you just made up, or is there actually one there?  If it is, the number isn 't anything VW put there.
Otherwise, a B indicates a 1970 1600 single port engine.
