Thing parts
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:40:33 AM »
I've got 7 thing door windows in various states of condition , also a thing diff pulled out of a thing trans years ago I was told it was limited slip but I can't tell from looking at it unless it's some kind of spring clutch type .also have a set of plastic elbow covers for the thing top frame when the top is down , these are hard to find and generally go missing over time . I'd rather keep it around than sell it separately $200.00 for the works.

200 for everything?  The diff alone is  $1000 US used if it is a ZF.

Really?  Who's paying that much?

Yeah that seems crazy! There's one on the Samba now for $1600 ::)

I think they only came in the Mexican "Safari" 181's. At least those are the only one's I've ever heard of. Someone's Dad on this site has an NOS one that he bought from VW way back (think he said he paid about $1100 from VW - but that's new).

Don't know if Weddle engineering still produces a limited slip dif but I remember they offered one that was pretty reasonable - around $300 a bunch of years ago

That one's been on offer for a LONG time.  IOW, the market is saying they aren't worth that much.

I too saw the one on the samba for $1600

Bruce would know how much he sold his for in the past.  Has the price been going down? or up?  I still have a bunch of friction plates for you Bruce to have that I do not need from an 091 ZF.

Only limited slips on the market now new are well over $1000.

A small % of Mexican Type 181s had them.  But almost all the Things in Mex are gone now.  I remember in the mid 90s, it was common to see 4-5 in a row parked on the streets of Mazatlan.  Today you're lucky if you see 1 or 2 Things per day down there.

Could be you're thinking of a diff Peloquin sold.  All it was, was a spring loaded CV flange pushing on a small wedge shaped brass spacer to create some friction between the side gear and the housing.  Pretty lame compared to a real LSD.

It's hard to get $700 for a LSD at this time. Trust me I get a few a year maybe. Bruce is the king of zfs and knows best

Well..... if anyone wants the lot.. I'll take the top caps, and a couple of the windows off them if they want to sell them.
I understand if Kraut wants to sell as a lot.
