Official Tlc, Overhaulin', Chip Foose, Hdf Thread
« on: October 29, 2007, 01:55:00 PM »
The build happened on October 12th - October 19th

The prank was pulled on a gentleman some or most of you know hims as Hot Dog Fred.

The prank was not a theft as normal but as a TV commercial gone bad with Chip coming out and congratulating HDF.

The bus was a 1964 21 window bus with original paint (i could be wrong) some primer and rust that really couldn't be seen until it was blasted, driver and to my knowledge, it was a driver that used to pull a hot dog cart to the different VW shows, Fred, feel free to chime in and add in here.

As you know or you dont know, they build a vehicle in 8 days, from tear down to pinstripes and reveal.

The Builders on the build besides the a-team are

Geoff & Laurie from Canada Hot rods, formally of Air Speed Parts, These guys built the Hot Rod Heb (brown) that was on the cover of just about every VW mag. This is the second time that they have been on the show.

Mark from Wolfsburg West, He was a huge asset to this build, I hope he is not as stressed as he was there on friday, lol.

Pete from Airkewld, We handled the suspension portion of the build

Paul Ioozio , He is doing the Orange Smoothie Project in the T-3 section, He has also been on the show before.

More to added once i recall everything.

Companies who helped out on the build

Wagenswest www.wagenswest.com
Wolfgang International www.wolfgangint.com
Vee Dub Parts Unlimited www.vwparts.net
Buggyworld www.buggyworld.com
F & J Body Shop
Airkewld www.airkewld.com
Wolfsburg West www.wolfsburgwest.com

More to be listed as I recall

As far as pictures, I or anyone that was on the build team, can not show pictures until it airs. But we will post what we have as soon as we can.

As far as when it airs, we were told late Feb, early April. A big window, but they say depending on how the reruns do, they do not show the new ones until the other phase out.

On a personal note, Chip is very down to earth. I though he would be cocky, but I was completely wrong. Same with the build team, very cool and they all bust there ass. The build was done with all the same people Chip uses on his riddler award winners so corners were not cut as some of you probably expect. Lots of cool custom touches were done but the purist might think otherwise. I was stoked to be a part of it as its probably not going to happen again as far as a vw on the show again, but you never know. More info later. Thanks guys!

Also, I am forwarding this thread address to the producers, build team and suppliers so they can all be in the loop. see ya.

Well, now that this has been posted, I can elaborate. Geoff called us up and suggested some of the LAND stuff would work well on the latest Overhaulin build. I thought maybe it was going to be a Camaro or something but was suprised to hear it was a Bus. So I hopped on the plane and flew the parts down to the set. Stephan Szantai thankfully picked me up from LAX and we drove to the set in Huntington Beach(stopping at In&Out burger first).
We tracked down the bus and our local boys Geoff and his brother at Lanzinis bodyshop, covered in sanding dust, weary from lack of sleep. Some pretty wild and unusual mods, not your normal restricted 'cal Look' style. The crew and everybody involved were super friendly and cool, not at all what I expected. Chips shop is quite small and packed to the rafters, the Overhaulin set(a different building) is spacious and chaotic. I ended up helping out with the engine for a few hours(that's about as close I will come to any VW van..) ;) , Stephan shot some pix and I headed home. Geoff and Laurie are now on the Overhaulin build in Vegas, hush hush..

Those guys are animals. The first day they did a 32 hour session. Came back after 5 hours of sleep and worked again.

From what I can tell, this is going to help out their new shop big time. All the exposure and t-shirts with their logos on them is going to help big time. I don't think I met you while I was there but I appreciate you coming down and donating what you did. When Geoff was spieling on the motor stuff, he did name drop you a couple of times. I hope it makes it on tv.  :P

Ok here's the deal, I can't post any pic's of it but i'm sure someone some where will post one and my guess it will be on the Samba (as it's being talked about over there, but you wont see any from me.) It was a a lot of work but well worth it. My brother and I worked on average 20 hrs a day on it with a total of 160hrs each over 8 days! The entire crew, A-Team, and staff are the best around, you couldn't meet a better bunch of people.

Pete from Airkewld, Mark from Wolfsburg, Paul the stalker (aka \"it's out a 1/16\")  :D are all top notch guys who without them this project could never of been finished on time.

Big thanks to Darren and Lanny for getting us the parts on short notice and coming down to install them.

I can't really say much about the project other than it's not stock, not over the top, but custom with some Foose touches that many will not even notice.....some you will.

It's hard to please everyone when it comes to a Vintage VW Custom build but it's done with as much respect to the VW as possible but enough unique touches that you can't help but know it's the Overhaulin Bus.

I'll post a lot more on this once it airs but for now thats about all I can say.

Hope you guys enjoy the episode and be nice...they made me speak a few times and it's not easy ask Pete :P
