Seeking Engine Advice
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:51:56 PM »
Hello

I am seeking your advice on building an engine for my Notch project. I would like something with more umph than a stock 1600 but still want a street drivable car. My budget is somewhat limited. So far, I have:
- a new universal engine case that I bought when Geoff was closing down
- a counterweight crank that is 30/30 under
- a stock cam
- a set of stock dual port heads
- a set of 1700 Ps and Cs (but maybe I could look at 1800 or 1900cc)
- a set of baby Dells
- a full flow oil filter with a Gene Berg pressure relief for the oil pump
- a reservoir on the bottom of the case for oil

My concern is that a 30/30 under crank might be too wishy washy for anything other than a stock engine. Would the dells work with a 1700, 1800 and 1900 engine?

Any advice you would provide would be much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

Dave Sanderson

Dells will work fine with the stock jets for the 1776, if you go upto the 1914 you will need to re jet. Using the 94mm A P&C's to build a 1914 will give you the grunt your looking for, use a Engle 100 or 110 to get good low end -mid range power with those heads.

The crank is fine to use but if you burn a rod bearing again it will then bw a paper weight. A 30/30 still has lots of miles on it but if you want to be able to rebuild it time and time again get a std or 10 crank.

Thanks. You probably recognized this crank from Matt's engine as the one that got fried when the oil filter let go. Maybe I should look for a better crank.

I agree with what Geoff has already said. For larger displacement, maybe think about going to 36 or 40 Dells, or Webers.

And I would like to add, that if you come the Great Canadian VW Show, keep an eye out for Tom Hansen's T3 Notch. It will give you an idea of what is possible.

It's an insane world out there... and I'm proud to be part of it!
