I just got an old german Bosch 009 distributor. When I cleaned it up and could see inside the body, it turns out there is only one advance spring inside? It looks like there is a matching spring post, 180 deg from the one spring. Is it okay to use this distributor to get my engine started? Is that some kinda performance mod, removing a spring? or do they only come with one spring?
Anyone know or have a link that shows a cut-away of a 009? and how to remove the plate that the points bolt to?
TIA

Okay, I figured out how to remove the plate. here is a pic. So will the advance just come on sooner with one spring? I assume it will run poorly? Correct?

they only come with one spring.
Thanks Tom. Are you sure though? Because opposite the existing spring, there is exactly the same post and plastic retaining sleeve/clip thingy that is grooved to hold a spring?

Listen to Tom. All 009s came with only one spring. Other spec Bosch distributors used 2 springs, like stock VW distributors.

Thank you Master Bruce! While I didn't doubt Master Tom's response I guess I just wanted a second opinion just in case. :P
Thanks to both of you,
