Title: Gas Heater Q's
Post by: Chris on January 16, 2004, 10:17:13 AM
I am experiencing some strange things with my gas heater. The heater itself functions like a toaster oven. Lots and Lots of HEAT! But when I turn a corner sharply I get a gas smell through the vents. I know dont make sharp turns, also after I turn of the gas heater I will get the odd whiff of gas. Any ideas? I drive a 1976 Bus, if you didnt notice that already.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

P.S. Please buy my DAMN FORD (http://forums.airspeedparts.com/index.php?act=ST&f=24&t=831)

If you can't find the problem (sorry i have no experience) give louis a call at Duane's German Autohaus - he has a tonne of experience with them. 604-533-4781

Sounds like your gas cap isn't sealing.  Does it only stink of gas turning one way?  If not that, I'd look at all the vent hoses of your gas tank.

Drove erratically all the way home today, with heater off. Never touched it. Even filled up with cheap gas today! No gas smell. It only seems to happen when I use or have used the gas heater.

I have another Gas Heater Question to add to this thread.  The gas heater (BN2) I installed  in my beetle doesn't seem to put out much heat at all.  It also has troubles lighting up or staying lit on days where the temperature is around or below 0deg C.   It doesn't seem to have an cracks in the combustion chamber, glow plug gets mighty hot, fans running, and you can hear the pump clicking away.  I've opened the stroke up a little bit it seems to put out marginally more heat.  I'd expect it to put out ALOT more heat than it does for the gas it consumes.  Help?

i have a BN2 in my 67 T1 as well, taken from a late beetle, and am expieriencing the same staying lit/ firing up thing as well on cold days. Perhaps this is a common problem and someone could enlighten us?...
