So that others may learn from what happened.  What kind of time frame did it go from start to BLAZE?  Did you have lots of time to get out and to safety or was it a mad rush?  I ask because I plan on putting seatbelts in the back of mine for my two small children.

I know this is a crappy thing to think of now but how involved was it when you noticed it? Would a fire extinguisher have made a difference? could you have gotten the decklid open? How long from stop and bail out until you took that photo?
Title: One More Beetle Beyond Repair
Post by: amishrabbi on August 18, 2006, 10:16:29 PM
from when my rpm dropped till we looked behind and saw flames out teh deacklid was about 20seconds, i did have to make sure it was in gear (no ebrake didnt want it to roll away) before i jumped out. as long as the front seats fold down easily getting small children out of the back wouldnt be a problem in the time frame i had. if i had of had a fire extingusher in the car there is a good chance i could have saved it from killing the whole car, but there would have been large amounts of damage to the back end no matter what.

next bug the first thing i buy is a fire exingusher

i should also add the only reason the extingusher would have been helpful to me is because i had standoffs and could have just sprayed it through there. without them i doubt i would have been able to open the engine compartment

What about buying it back? Get your claim and use the extra $$$ to fix yours. I am not too familiar with heat of a fire and its effect on the metal. I don't think it would get hot enough. Gerry? Lanny? Rusty? Stephan? Anyone know?

Ive been through the same and it hard to get over its good you and your bro are all healthy and safe smoke inhalation from a fire like that can seriously harm a person and good luck finding a nother one

my car :(

I do not know if a fire extinguisher would have diminished the damage. Today I got my self one anyway.

Actually I Just finished up painting the engine compartment on a car that had some fire damage....lucky it wasn't too bad in this case and not much metal warpage.....it was contained to just the engine compartment....so, this car in perticular was definately worth fixing.
What i'm basically trying to say is....yes, his car is probably fixable....but at what cost? Phosphate dipping? Metal work? Could be cheaper to find a dry Super!
Gerry

so after realizing that its hard to find a 73 sunroof super i might try and talk icbc into fixing it. providing theer isnt huge amounts of metal warpage...altho i know the roof didnt fair to well (the sunroof exploding was damn cool though)

I know your partial to supers, but my 67 you came to look at in Huntington is still available.

I'm pretty sure ICBC won't fix that.  In my time in the bodyshops, I've only seen one fire victim that was repaired, and it was a $150,000 Peterbilt.

i prob have no chance of it being fixed, just going to be a pain for me to find a new super since so few are for sale and fewer are curved window

maybe ill get lucky tomorow and someone will have one there

imho, that amount of heat will have warped and weakened the metal to a state that is beyond repair.

On top of all the warpage, all that new bare metal has rusted from the water the FD poured on it.  The truth is that the ICBC estimators will laugh at you if you push to get it fixed.  That car is so far a write off.

If you really want a rust free 1303, you need to go to Cali or AZ.  They are cheap and plentiful, and not highly desireable there.  Sunroofs are common.

fixing was jsut my wishful thinking. my first car and all :(

The best advice I can give is to not buy the first car you find.  Be very selective so that your next car is better than the last one.

Your right silas I forgot about the hot metal being cooled with water will harden the steel making it brittle

The shame of it is it was pretty rust free.  Bruce is correct don't be in a hurry

Maybe you find a deal today.

Here's lead #1.  Yesterday, Silas and I were milling around the late cars when a guy who's been out of VWs for a while came by.  He said he's thinking of selling his 73 Super (and it does have a Sunroof!!!)  His name is Barry Van Der Greff.  604 795 7584.  He's out in the 'wack.

that was a good find bruce.

i met brendan (amishrabbi) shortly after that and told him that you had some info for him. i showed him where your car was and told him to look for you.

i also told him that there were a few early 70's cars in the parking lot that were for sale so hopefully he got some more leads.
