Title: Help-how Much For Karman Ghia Vert
Post by: viguy on July 22, 2006, 01:18:03 PM
My girlfriend is interested in a Karman Ghia we looked at today. I'm a bug owner and I really haven't been paying attention as to how much Karman Ghia's are worth these days.
Here's the deal...it's a 73 vert that is very straight, good paint and body. The dash is cracked, the rear of both pan halves are very rusty (hole the size of my fist on one side clearly visible) front of heater channel near tire openings fairly rusty on both sides. I would suspect right through for sure. Seats good, top good, motor seems good. Basically the mechanical appears good. Nice looking drives well.

It's on a lot, there are selling for a guy and asking $10,000 plus taxes.

What do you guys think? What are they going for these days.

Would really appreciate some info here.

Mark

When there's rust underneath you can see because they didnt bother to cover it up, but the body looks okay, then there's rust hidden by bondo and paint that they did bother to cover up. If the car is exactly as it appears, it's worth about $6K. If it turns out there's more corrosion that you don't know about, or there's a bunch of non-OEM parts, the price goes down.

Consider buying a car in the southwest. I bought my first Ghia locally, and I never will again. My second Ghia came from California, and the extra expense of the purchase price was more than justified by not having to spend thousands to repair rust. I'd rather spend $750 to have a car trucked up from Arizona than to pay $2000 for panels & welding.

Yea, jason your sooooo right,  Get one of those two if you are serious, rusty and 10,000 is not a deal at all.
If you look at the years of ghia a 73 is on the lower side of the converts so anywhere near that much money plus rust repair is a pain in the ass.

I think Jason is being very generous at $6k.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback! I think the excitement of driving a VW again really got me more jazzed up than I realized. My bug has been off the road for several years now and is currently under going a body off resto in my shop.  They sure are fun to drive!

Thanks again every one who responded, really appreciate you taking the time on a stinking hot day to send me your thoughts.

Cheers,

Mark

There is a nice looking 1966 Ghia blue/white hardtop that parks infront of my work everyday.  It is for sale, there is no price listed, however there is a phone number.  I can grab it for you if you'd like.  I know nothing about it except that it looks fairly straight, has nice chrome, and the owner drives it daily.

Cheers, Stephan
