is it worth it to turbo the motor or would i be better off getting a bigger displacement (nothing more than 1900) and turboing that later?

Hey.... be nice I have a turbo on mine, and in every ones eyes 2 strikes against me. It is a 1600, and it is a singleport.
It depends what you are after. If you are looking for 120 hp daily driver then a 1600 will be alright. James had a 120 hp screamer 1915 and with slicks pulled off a 13 something 1/4.
How fast do you want to go?
How much do you want to spend?

im not sure what hp i should be shooting for, i need something that is going to work as a DD which means i need to be able to close my decklid, get decent milage out of it and not have it so powerful im going to be repairing it all the time
right now i have 2000 ish to spend, but if i need more than that it can wait to be done, i just need a plan

2000 isn't enough to do it right, save some more cash first.

personally i think you should build yourself a good reliable motor to start, then if you feel the need start looking at a turbo system.
a dead reliable 1776 would be a kick in the pants compared to a stock 1600 if built right, and would last you a very long time, even a well built mild stroker like bruces would be fun as hell to drive and if maintained would last. plus a good mild performance motor is a very good base for a turbo motor.
like james said, start saving some cash, and build it with GOOD quality parts the first time. you will spend more $$ initially but its worth it in the end.

yea im not one to buy cheap parts for anything, if you are doin it you might as well do it the best you can the first time
so i should build myself a mild larger displacement motor then look at turboing it later on

you could always do a budget motor and just use a second-hand turbo off of a Subaru or something
they don't run insane amounts of boost, but you could run it on your 1600 with very little problems, and could probably fit it all under your decklid
