Soooooo....which 091 tranny should I be looking for for my drag car? Tranny will be raised 1 1/2 - 2\" and would run the linkage on top of the tunel if needed.
What is the shifter movement for the side shift tranny? up/down or same as a regular tranny with front to back and side to side rotation?
If I remember correctly the 6 rib tranny comes with a 4:57
what ring gears come standard in the side shift tranny.
pros and cons for both would be nice.
I need to start looking for what I want now.

Tail shift all the way, it is a simple instal with the shift rod extension when using the stock 091 nose cone. Its way more $ and work when changing to a Berg T1 style nose cone. The side shift trans would be too much work for no gain.
Late 002 5ribs have 4;86 \"E\" case and others w.88 4th i think
002 5 ribs also came with a 5;43 \"L\"case .82 4th
091 came with 5;43 w.88 4th and also i heard of a 4;58 with a .88 4th but i think that was a aftermarket R&P

Is a 6 rib tranny a 091?

yes, what you will find is a 3 rib 68-73 or so 5 rib or piramid case (it has a piramid shape, somewhat on top) then the 76-79 091 6 rib

I wouldn't use the 091 for a drag car. Although I have no personal experience on this, but its been said you can't speed shift an 091 with the stock nosecone. The mechanism in there is real goofy compared to a beetle trans. That's why Berg developed their Bus intermediate housing, so you could use all Beetle shift rods. It uses a stock Bug nosecone and hockey stick. Its too bad Berg was too stupid to recognise the superiority of the 091 'box, cause his intermediate housing only works on 72-75 002 Bus 'boxes, aka pyramid or 5 rib. This is what Mike Lawless put in his Ghia. Don't believe the article in hotVWs last spring, he didn't use an 091 like it says.
And Geoff's right, side shift would be a huge PITA for no benefit (unless you were going to use a Vanagon 5 speed)

My racing buddies use 091 stock nose cones adapted to Rotory engines.... They speed shift I know that

I think it's a bit of a rumor about not shifting well (quick under load) im sure the T1 is better in this aplication for shifting but the strength gaind in a bus box may out weigh a bad shift here and there.

well surprise.... my tranny that was in my super is a transform rebuilt with a super diff in it. Gees, it is christmas still. I couldn't tell if it was rebuilt or not as it was nicely painted black and the ssc was a nice blue color, so I decided to take it out to see if my hunch was right. Yup....
Now I have another question.
What R&P do I have....This is what is on it G8 35 and a h ( possibly a 4) and it is 6 13/16 across the teeth. No other markings.
Is there a way of telling which mainshaft is in it without taking too much apart? I would assume the 9 tooth main shaft but.... you never know with a rebuilt tranny.
I have 3 ssc trannies an AH ...AT.....AM...code .... and about 8 axels all with cv's.... The AT is what I took apart today. So maybe I will just run a ssc tranny for now, it is just which one... I have to sell one tranny.
I was thinking of using the one with the 4:12 R&P for the drag car, keeping the 3:88 and selling whatever is left with my car soon. The tranny I took apart tonight grinds into 2nd and 3rd if shifting too fast so I'm not sure which tranny core to put back into the car.

Oh I forgot to add
My super diff has 2 threaded washers on each side holding 1 of the shafts through the middle, these washers were at 1 time welded/brazed to the carrier but both have broken the bond and are just loose in spinning 1/2 turn until the weld hits the casting, Does this need to be re-welded, or can I grind off the weld and put on the strongest threadlocker?

An 835 R&P is 4.37:1
Any SSC rebuilt by Rancho will have a 4.12 unless it was ordered with something different. I bet Transform does the same.
Of the trans codes you listed, the AT is 3.88, AH is 4.12, and AM is 4.37
