Who owned the first few VW's/ KDF's?
Didn't Hitler himself own one? Are any of them still around?

The 1939 Cabrio that Hitler rode in during the corner stone laying at Wolfsburg is in the VW museum. The KDF cars were built thruought the war and there are a few very nice examples out there (as well as many others). As far as i know Hitler never owned one.

Seems like I read or heard a couple years ago that he owned one. Just wondering if there was any evidence of it.

Interestingly enough Hitlers first ride in a bug was his last ride in a automobile. Where he went to his bunker to commit suicide..

Hitler's only ride in a bug couldn't have been his last in a car could it? Like Geoff said he rode in a 'vert at the VW factory in May 39. He died in 44. He had to have rode in many a car in those 5 years. Is there something i misread?

It was.
I have it in a book and I'm sure I read it that way.
His last ride and first ride in a production bug not a prototype was to his death.
He had ridden in his priced mercedes many times before but never did learn to drive.

Hm its a british vw book all about beetles and its not by Keith Seume.
I found it in Wolfsburg this summer. I will keep my eye open for it and if I find it let you know.

I just came in from replacing the smog and fuel lines on mine. I cleaned up and sprayed the outside of the air bath cleaner as well. I would have replaced the vacuum hoses as well but I forgot to order them. I guess that's my next order for Geoff.
Tomorrow I am putting the new headlights in. :)

Key word \"Production\" Beetle but i still doubt he was driven in a KDF beetle to the bunker.

Kevin, If this is true and there is a KDF 4wd Beetle here what year did they flee? No German military vehicles were allowed to be shipped home or out of occupied areas without proper paperwork relasing them (this was directly following the end of WWII thru late 1946 and maybe later) These vehicles were usualy impounded for the Allied inspection forces.

A 4WD Beetle over here would be cool but how could a VW fan part with it? If I was in that position I'd insure it to the tits and keep it it a well locked and heated garage. I would take it to car shows and the scatter cruise around town/island.

Quite honestly if I inherited a bug like that I would hold onto it for dear life.
Even with my moms original 62 ragtop I would keep it..
It was in the family till 1992... all original :(

Oh finally.......the first person to actually read THE BEST VW CHRISTMAS STORY EVER :P I think it would be a best seller to the vw community.
That was what it is.... a story.... I should be a novelist..I bet you guys were getting tingles, and I thought my wife was bad with her romantic novels.

Yeah it sounded like every other story you hear of a Split or a Kubel that never comes true(the facts dont add up), I think Matt said what we all were thinking.

The convertible Hitler rode in was a 38, not a 39. This is proven by the fact that the cornerstone laying ceremony was in May 38. That convertible was given to Adolf as a gift, and he sent it to his Austrian retreat in the mountains.
That car has the most interesting history. Post war found it in the hands of an unknown individual, who probably didn't know it was Adolf's car. The guy drove it for many years then traded it in at a VW dealer in the early 50s. The dealer did some restoration on it then put it on the lot and sold it to yet another unsuspecting owner. The guy knew it was really old because in the late 50s when VW put the word out looking for the oldest VW, he came forward. He traded it for a new Karmann cabrio. VW then restored it and placed it in their museum. The car is supposed to have between 2 and 300,000 km on it!
