Title: Brining In An Old Mexican Van?
Post by: 72vwtype2 on December 24, 2003, 12:06:54 PM
I am having a tough time finding a 1972 VW Double/Single Cab locally (GVRD) or even in the US. The main reason being that they were not imported to the US after 1971  and only a few made it here. So I am thinking I may start looking at Mexico as a place were ther may be more of a selection. So my questions are as follows:

1. Has anyone ever brought a vehicle from Mexico to Canada?
2. Where would you search for a vehicle in Mexico (i.e. Is there something similar to the \"Buy and Sell\" that we have here)?

Any hints/advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Phil.

Save your time, don't bother looking in Mexico.

First, all older cars there are BEAT to death.  Then they fix them a bit to get them running and BEAT them to death again.  Whereas here most cars are new because generally the average driver can afford to own a newer car.  In Mexico, most cars are new because they DESTROY their cars really fast.  I am convinced there is no translation into Spanish for the word \"maintenance\".

Second, of all the time I've spent driving around Mex, I can't recall ever seeing any double cabs or single cab Bay windows.  I think the reason is because German vans were not imported to Mex, rather they were made there.  And I will suggest VWoM probably didn't make SCs or DCs.

In fact there are many Dbl cabs in Mexico as i have seen them, although not too common they are there and were made up into the late 80's in Brazil and maybe Mexico. One thing about the Brazilian and Mexican vans were they used the T1 motor and later swaped to a h20 motor in the mexican pass vans.

CB performance once had one of the last Dbl cabs that were made down there. Alsi there was one on the Samba last month, try looking there.

I know this isn't a DBL cab but it is a late Mexican h20 bus (just so people can see what they look like. Mexico stoped building them last year. i think this is a older one as it has the bay window roof line, the later ones had a higher roof tine that looked almost like a westy roof but non pop up.

Here is a shot of the Mexico line of buses being built, note the roof line!

and last, a bad pic of a Brazilian late model bus. Note the early style side and corner windows.
