Hey everyone got a question
I was driving home from work the other day, i stopped at a light and everything was fine, when the light changed i put the car in gear and went nowhere. So now all my gears make a grinding noise and the car doesnt move at all. So I have pulled the engine to take a look and see if i can figure out the problem.
My clutch looks a little worn, but overall is in descent shape. throwout bearning is also fine. with the car on jackstands if i put the cluch on the spline and turn it both wheels turn (its in gear, obviously), if i turn one wheel the other turns as well as the clutch disk. now as far as i can tell it looks fine, but does anybody have any suggestions on where to look or what might be wrong?

did your shifter move? maybe its out of adjustment and your not hitting the gears

Try doing the turning the clutch disc thing with the e-brake on or wheels on the ground and in gear. try it again while someone messes with the shifter. Look at the drum splines too.

shifter moves fine and seem to be working.
i think its in the passenger side drum somewhere, its loose and things are moving when they shouldnt. so now its time to pull the drum off and see if the problem is there

i dont know yet, i'll get the tools from work tomorrow to take the hubs off.

Does it make the grinding noise when you are trying to push the shifter into gear, or are you able to get the shifter into gear and it grinds when you let out the clutch?

it goes into gear no problem and grinds when i let the clutch out

alright, so i took the hub off and the spline teeth on the hub are gone, 100% gone. so now i need a new hub.
also, everything in there is covered in grease and i dont know where it came from.. but it doesnt seem good. gotta figure that out too

grease or gear oil? you probably need new axle seals, by hub I assume you mean drum, unless your running disk brakes, all the items you need are available through airspeed give them a call, there open!

i dont know if its grease or gear oil.. i guess gear oil.. and yes i do mean drum, my bad.
to bad i dont have a car to get out to airspeed today..

If it's a swing axle car it could be gear oil or brake fluid or both. Otherwize it's probably just brake fluid, which means new wheel cyl's.

When you took the drums off how tight were the Axle nut that hold the drum on?

i dont think its brake fluid, i just replaced the entire brake system, and i dont believe the resivoiour is low, but i'll check on it.
they were tight, but take off by hand and breaker bar

A stripped spline means you didn't tighten the axle nut enough. Live and learn.

it was tight and wouldnt go any tighter, i think the bearning broke, but you may be right, it may have just been to loose

3/4\" drive breaker bar?
Here's what I do. 3/4\" breaker bar , 3 ft. long jack handle as an extension , stand on the end with all my weight(199.9lbs.) , another bounce or two to line up the cotter pin. This should be needed to remove it as well. This may be over kill but it should be torqued to well over 200 ft lbs.

I have a 36mm combination wrench. I stick a piece of 2\" dia pipe 4' long over one jaw of the open end. Then lean into it at 5' away. I'd say at least 400 ftlbs. Same deal for the bolt holding the flywheel on.
Hans, you are at 600ftlbs.

Maybe a little too much? :blush:
Also , I've found that once a drum has been run loose to the point of wiggling on the shaft, it will not stay torqued for long again no matter how tight you get it. Not sure why but I've seen it happen a few times.

the drums are supposed to be torqued at 256 ft lbs.

They have to be tight tight! I put mine one with a slug wrench and a 10lb sledge hammer when no more moves of nut and wrench starts mushrooming it's tight. The one time I was in a hurry and tighten a bit thought good enough I pulled a spline on a disc on my rail.

253 or 217 depending on the year. To be precise.
