Title: Type 3 Drums

What I have is a full drum to drum rear end out of the destroyed T34 Ghia I pulled out of a wreckers hands.  It's a '63 telling me that the brakes are way to expensive to find parts for.  Would I be able to use the backing plates off of a newer set of T3 drums and still use the drums I have?  Pro's / Con's..??..  I'm told I need to go type 3 or type 1 brakes on my double cab if I'm gonna lower it so I need to get this figured out.  Would I be better off to just find a complete set or even use the type 1 drums I have?

I don't think you need type 3 brakes to lower the bus, beetle brakes will work just as well. I think you need the axles though

I'm getting my information from your other brother.  You know how reliable he is.  The axles I have pinned down.  It's these damn brakes that are killing me.

the full scenerio is replacing the '59 tranny for newer.   Going straight axle and turning it down a notch.  This tells me I need to acquire a pair of long axles, tranny I have, and brakes ( so I'm told ).  I have a full set of drums off a '64 type 2.  As well as the before mentioned '63 type 3 ones.  I also have a set of type 1 drums.... (can't remember the year).

What I am saying is that if you go T3 brakes you get more braking surface (wide five). If your 63 has the dual wheel cyl style, good luck finding parts. If not we should be ok.


Can we utilize the brakes from a 67 (4 bolt) and use a T3 wide five drum and still achieve the same upgrade in braking over beetle brakes???

yes. as long as its single cylinder stuff, its all interchangeable
