My wife has a telephone interview for a new hospital openning in Kamloops, anyone from there care to tell me what its like, have looked on various sites but hard to tell what it's really like, thought it best to hear from the horses mouth.
Thanks in advance.

It is about a 3 1/2 hours of freeway driving from Vancouver. Population between the Kamloops area could be 120,000 to 160,000 residents. Winter normally snows and temps -20C to -02C, Summer usually dry heat 27 C to 38C. lots of outdoors activities, shopping is good, and they have golf courses too.
My wife is from Kamloops.

I like the 'Loops looks good as I drive through :)
-
Search the archives... Theres a thread where I was considering moving to the Loops or Kelowna.
-
I hear Kamloops is a shithole! Its too close to the inbreds in Salmon Arm. ;)
-
Well here is my 2 cents .
First I don,t know what you are comming from as to wether it is a step up or down .
Cold in winter hot and dry in summer very desert like not alot of trees
Great mountain biking area
Busy downtown center lots of stores in middle housing fans out around
Lots of transients and indians Huge reserve near by and right on major highway connecteing Canada (now there are not all bad but do but do cause some trouble
There appears to be a have or have not class situation that decides where you live (not much middle class)
There is sking, hiking ,biking and about you are 4 hours from Vancouver
Best bet would be to contact the chamber of commerce in Kamloops and get some info sent to you .
Each persons comfotrt level is different and yes brian Me redneck likes Salmon arm better wouldn,t live in Kamloops my self just shop there . There is good and bad everywhere and I guess again not knowing what you are leaving it might be great for you I don,t know .
Sorry If I sound a little negetive I ,m a very critical person maybe a lttle closeminded and racist but working on it .Just not the area for me might do you just fine .Hope this helps
-
Should have put though I would live in Kamloops over the lower mainland though any time of the week .Left that Ratrace 14 years ago vowing to never return unless to visit . :P
And yes i,m medicated and see a counciller  Boy I'm sure this will be open season on Outkast oh well !
You didn't think I was normal did you

I spent 8 months living there as a co-op student 15 yrs ago, at the time it was poised to overtake the Okanagan in terms of industry growth, but I think Kelowna caught up and passed them shortly after. The hospital used to be *the* place for new nurses to train outside of Vancouver, not so sure about that now-a-days. As has been mentioned, its hot in the summer, cold in the winter, has great mountain bike trails and is central for lots of other outdoor activities (fishing, etc); it does lack some of the finer amenities of bigger cities such as Kelowna, *but* any city is only as good as you make it.
-
Do they still have Spoolmak days there ?Ooh boy fun fun fun!
-
If your into a commute at all, the shuswap is only 45 min. away (correct me if I'm wrong here inbreeders). I don't think anyone could complain about livin there.
Then again, who says Kamloops is your final destination. This could be that one door that opens for you and your family to finally come to Canada.
-
Years ago I used to work in the pulp mill I liked it. Can get real cold in the winter and real hot in the summer. If your into boating and swimming Shuswap Lake just down the road is huge you could get lost on the lake! Salmon fishing in the river.

You can check out housing for any Canadian regions at www.mls.ca
Might be good to compare housing costs. I think you can get a lot more house up there than you could for the same price in Vancouver. I know if we weren't connected to family here and could find work in the interior we would definately consider it. Lower Mainland housing/property is expensive........a bit better in the valley (outskirts of Vancouver) where we are.
-
And they have a pulp mill.
There was this chick with her boyfriend and she said to him\" kiss me where it stinks\" So they move to Kamloops. ;)

I spent four years going to school there. As far as things to do it's great. It's like any larger city; it has it's good and it's bad. I like Kamloops my wife can't stand it. Vise Versa with Kelowna. As far as winters yes it can get down to -20c but so can Salmon Arm. I just can't remember the last time it did. You will have 4 seasons unlike the lower mainland. The summers ARE hot and dry.(Reminds me of Southern Alberta summer) It's NOT the UK.
Anywhere you can hang your hat is home basically. Go for it! If for no other reason than it's a stepping stone into the wonderful province I proudly call home. Least until after the winter olympics in2010 when all hell breaks loose.
-
Have lived here in Kamloops for 19 years now and I really like it If it takes me 15 min to drive somewere I think I am in rush hour In about 30 min of driving time you can be alone in the bush doing something you enjoy. It is way better than the Okanogen for me as down there it just seems to be as busy as the lowemainland But hey to each their own
Best of luck

Guys and Gals, many many thanks for all your helpful posts, it was well worth it, I'll let ya know how alex ( my wife ) gets on, her interview is friday 11pm your time, 7pm ours.
I never knew I could cross all my fingers at the same time.
-
Best of luck hope it all works out fine and when you get here come to the Shuswap for a beer and chat only 45 min away and near a lake buddy . :)
-
I think Kamloops is a great place to live. My brother has been living there for 20 years and raised two kids there. They love it. Probably a bit sleepy if you are used to living in the big city. Lots of recreation activities year round. Some of the best fishing within an hour's drive. Nice country...i think you would like it.

Thanks very much again, It always surprises me how kind you guys are, seeing as we have never even met, alex had her interview, she says it went OK, but then she is probably being hard on herself, we should find out within the next week, I'll keep you posted.
Outkast, that would be cool, chat and a beer sounds great, fingers crossed we get the chance to do that.

Housing market is still rockin there... If you have an opportunity take some of those saved up pounds and buy a house while your there. It is growing 15+% a year currently in values. great place to invest in a house for the next 5+ years...
-
I bought a place in Kamloops last summer... couldn't afford in the lower mainland. Do I miss the rain... no, do I miss the traffic on the coast... hell no, but is there much of a VW group up here... not really esp aircooled. It's a good place to raise a family, and there is a lot to do if you're into the outdoors. But if you're young and looking for a heavy night life Kamloops is kind of a sleeper
It's like any place, there's good and there is bad. But you can do a lot worse then Kamloops.
Best of luck

I have known people from Birmingham and Sheffield, sound as a pound, salt of the earth, northen people tend to be easier to get on with then us Southen people.
As for the cities, yuck what a hole!!!!!!!!. We are very lucky down here in Bournemouth, lovely place to live if you can afford it,

You guys are so cool, many many thanks for all the kind words, we both feel very grateful for all the support we have had over the past year.
They will aim to get us out there within 8 months which is cool as that gives enough time to sort stuff out.
Looks like we will miss the Great Canadian this year but what the hell theres plenty more and I am sure we will visit Vancouver this year and I would like to meet some of you at least and buy some beers, sorry lots of beer.
Updates as I get them brothers
