I seem to have end play even with the drums mounted on my swing axle tranny. Its almost like the bearing is sliding slightly in the bearing cap. NOT SURE.....I believe I have the correct bearing caps.
Anyone offer some advice???? :D

Is the big nut tight?
Do you have the thin spacer on the inboard side of the bearing?

I got all excited. I thought you hit the nail on the head. I took it apart and everything seems to be there.
Starting from the inside, I have the Spacer, bearing, small O ring, large rubber O ring, washer, then the larger spacer. I put the drum on and tighten the nut up with an impact (about 120 ft pounds) I would normally tighten it more but I dont have the engine in nor emergency brake to help stop the wheel from spinning. Any other ideas?

It's a long shot, but I'd assemble it without the backing plate and bearing cover and see where the play is.

Well, I assembled it with out the cap and backing plate. I still seem to have a little play that comes from the bearing (both sides) I measured the inset on the bearing cap(approx 9.mm). With the bearing pushed into the axle tube I measured the distance from the bearing to the axle tube (where the bearing cap would mount up) and that was about 8mm. Not sure if that may allow for some of the play?
I also tried tightening the wheel nut tighter and that didnt help. Do you think I should try other bearing caps?

What is the part number cast into the bearing cap? I have seen 113 and 311 caps. I don't know what the difference is, but there must be something different otherwise there wouldn't be different part numbers. I think Lanny knows what the difference is.

i had the wrong bearing caps at one point and it would not let me tighten it up (it left a 1/4 inch gap between the cap and the backing plate)

The Bearing caps, backing plates, axel's and axel tubes are the \"original\" ones that we received with the car. But who knows the other owner could have swapped them around? :wacko:
Dad(Brent) and I are puzzled with this problem.

Just thought of something B&T , does the bearing it self have the play in it? ie is it worn out and has slop between the inner and outer race? Long shot but........ it's only about 1/32\" or 1/16\" play.

We bought Brand New bearings from airspeed.

It is about 1/16 ...is that normal or within an acceptable standards or should it have no play?
Sorry guys but I just want to get it right. Don't want to have to take it apart once the body is on.

There should be none.
Another thought...... are the bolts your using actually able to fully tighten down on the bearing cap? ie- not bottoming out on something.
Clean surfaces on the axle , backing plate, bearing cap?
I don't know , just thinking out loud.

We scrapped the paint off the backing plates, and the bolts do not bottom out.. :wacko:
Im puzzled.

Update......
ok , so it turns out all the play is in the new bearing itself.(Not sure what brand or where it's made). I checked one of my own 40 year old axle bearings . Sure enough,little or no play!! The new one probably has .030\" side play. I've seen this before with other bearings. Brand new trans mainshaft bearings with more play than the old one I wanted to replace. I can't use this. Went back to the supplier , and all their stock was the same. What the hell? Am I missing something here? Is this the new technology? What....?

That's just the part number. I was antisipating the brand to be \"China\". I've seen a lot of crap bearings from there such that I refuse to use those bearings in the gearboxes I build. Good used German are better than new China bearings.

That is the correct part # for the bearing, It could be that they were the made in China type, We have tried to get two or three brands of quality lately to offer the customer. I havent had a issue with the china ones as of yet ......but now I guess we have.
Jim will be getting more of the good NSK bearings in later today or tomorrow.

What about the \"FAG\" bearings? Can you not get them anymore? I thought Geoff would be familiar with them. :P

UPDATE:
I just pulled the bearing off the pan/tranny
Turns out that it is a JAPAN made bearing.

This one is marked \"NSK\" and \"6306\"
