Hello I'm conrad and I'm a newbie here.
I've got a 1968 vw with a 1914cc engine built last year that went kaputs on me six weeks or so after it was built (pic's below). The guy who built it had not done a vw engine in 15 yrs and i think he did something a little wrong (it drove for ~3000km). I'm fairly convinced there's very little damage done as it died when the starter was turning over the engine (not when it was running). I've got a bit of cash invested in it and I really want to make it work right (it never was jetted properly).
Some details are:
scat balanced & counterweighted crank (69mm)
cima 94mm pistons
engle 120 cam
compu-fire ignition module
bosch flow-through oil filter
HD oil pump
bolt together rocker shafts
holly electric fuel pump
weber idf 44 carb
Bosch 55 amp alternator
new stock connecting rods
new stock heads (needs larger valves and ported)
I plan on doing the rebuild myself sometime soon (hopefully done by January). It will be my first full engine rebuild. I'm kinda looking for a mentor type of person who is really good at building high performance engines who I could ask the odd question and help me figure out what went wrong once I have it apart. Any suggestions of people or shops I could ask? (or is anybody here with the experience willing?)
Should I join a club, and if so which one?
Any help or advice is appreciated . . .
thanks,
Conrad Brander (the car is patches)

make sure you put the large pulley tin back in when you run it next time as it can overheat from all the exhaust heat temp coming into the fan shroud area

Welcome.
First off, you need to stop by the Airspeed parts headquarters in Port Kells. Any questions you have about building your motor the right way can be answered by the knowlegable staff there, they can also supply you with all the necessary parts you will need.

The 'full mulhuland look'?, not really sure what you're referencing rusty - ya got any pic's for that? I'm always willing to entertain idea's . . .
And to everybody else thanks for saying hi - I'll stop bye airspeed and ask some questions for sure (and pick up a few needed items). As for the engine tin - it just wasn't on the engine for that picture; can't really remember why . . .

Hey Patches..
Nice car... A club with tons of knowledge is the DVKK, Many of the guys in that club have years and years of knowledge. Hook up with them.. I am sure they will trade VW knowledge for Astro van parts

Hey Thrasherbill,
thanks for the pic's - it's a pretty sweet ride. I'll keep it under consideration for the future bodywork stages - but for now I have to concentrate on getting it running again.
And and I'll look up the DVKK P.B., thanks for the tip.
Nope. Sorry N und L, don't know a J.P.
Any recomendations for a good bodyman? My heater channels are a little drafty . . .
