Title: Removable Rear Apron
Post by: mikeT on October 01, 2005, 04:09:52 PM
Who has a removable rear apron on their bug? does it make the removal of the engine that much easier?? was it difficult to refit the apron properly or was it straight forward?

I was thinking there may be an easier way to removing the engine everytime, instead of using multiple floor jacks.

even tho i've never experienced it, i would imagine that a removable apron would make an engine re&re much easier.

there is a cool how to here...

http://www.mufflermike.com/ (http://www.mufflermike.com/)

click on \"earlier updates\" on the left, then click \"2003 updates\" and scroll about half way down the page. you'll see pics and a description of the installation of a removable apron on dominic the burnout kings flat black oval.

instead of attaching the apron back to the body somehow, do you think it would work to replace it by bolting the apron back on to the fenders(two holes on the bottom of the fenders), so by removing the two fender bolts on each side would allow the apron to come off???

Did I confuse anyone??

Mine is removable and I don't have anything other than pressure holding it... it only weighs 1-2lbs though. The pressure of the fenders/beading hold it in place no problem.

DON'T CUT!!!

Drill out the spot welds - way easier/cleaner! And if you go slow and are careful you don't go through the second piece.

ok.. here is a pic of the apron removed.  It came off without too much trouble.  Drilled out most of the spot welds a gave it a little tap with the hammer and it came off clean.

Ya I'm giving it a makeover, nothing extreme though. Some new paint and few bolt on goodies, If I feel rich maybe a new engine.
I just want to make it a clean daily driver hopefully for next summer.
I always thought removing the engine was a pain in the butt so I am trying to make it a little easier by removing the apron.
