Instead of going to the track tonight I got my new 4\" narrowed beam in my og paint '62 beetle, time to finish this thing up and sell it.

Went for a rather unsuccessful first trip in the car today around the block. The tires rub something aweful on the headlight buckets. I'll have to modifly those a little bit I guess

You've still got 2 inches of airgap between the ground and the body! :P
Lookin good though!

nice drop mike. the stance looks killer. that will be what i will try and achieve with the 64 sometime hopefully soon.
are you running drop spindles? if not, a set would help you get the front wheels back away from the buckets and back to the center of the fender well. and i'm sure you've made sure that it does rub on the buckets and not the inner wells or fender, correct?
-
Hey Silas,
I have a 4\" beam, dropped spindles and 135's. The headlight buckets are the only issue. I think if you want to run low all the time then shortening the pan head does the \"centre the wheel\" trick, but dropped spindles do help.
The inner fender wells, and fenders are clear with 5 spokes. If running stock offset wheels the inner fender wells may become an issue.
Cheers and thanks for welding tips.
Mike

Got the front end all buttoned up, light working just waiting for a few things from Airspeed and hopefully get it insured this weekend. Looking forward to driving this summer!

wicked ride man, where abouts in Surrey ya from?
i haven't seen your car around
if you're still looking to modify those buckets, just cut them out completely and solder the wires directly onto your bulb terminals
i think the HID-style aftermarket bulbs are a lower profile too, if you need even more clearance
i'm pretty sure just cutting the buckets out will be fine though, you shouldn't need to modify the bulbs unless you're going for a six inch beam or something narrower

and leave the back of the headlight exposed? i'd be concerned about water and road debris damaging the wire connections and the bulbs.
car looks great mike. good luck with the insurance and soon you'll be rolling hard. it's going to feel good, eh.
-
I cut out the backs of the buckets partially, then welded on a flat piece of steel, then primered, painted and sealed it. It seems to work fine, no clearance issues now
Rear tires are standard 165's

looks killer Mike

bulbs are bulbs
put some epoxy over the soldered terminals to keep the water out
but like i said, you don't really need to cut them completely unless you're going for a 5-6 inch beam or narrower
still, glad you found a working solution
i'll keep my eye out for you rolling around town :)

sorry man, you need to get your facts straight.
i've heard of headlight bucket modification due to extreme lowering jobs, but never bulb modification. if you can find someone who has had to modify their headlight bulbs because of a lowering job, i'm all ears.
also, narrowing is really the least of your worries with headlight bucket clearance. you could run a 10\" narrowed tricycle beam up front and still clear the buckets. it's when you start to go lower in the front that you run into problems. adjusters turn the leaf springs and the leaf springs turn the torsion arms up and that pushes the tire up into the fender and forward towards the headlight buckets. spindles will compensate for a few inches in the adjusters and bring the wheel slightly back to the \"center\" of the wheel well. 1 or 2 sets of caster shims should set your caster back close to manufacturers spec. and of course tire size is a big issue. and then depending on how low you are you have to be concerned with tie-rod to gas tank clearance and bump steer. but it doesnt matter if you're 4,5,6 or 8 inches narrowed, you should never have to cut the bucket out completely or modify your bulbs.
now back to drooling over mikes car. B)
btw mike, are you insured?

very close, had some hicups today. Truck got broken into, bastards!!!!!!!
By next saturday it will be on the road!
