Ok I understand the usefullness of the material in the way of ceramics being very hard.....but they are very brittle as well. Wouldn't this be a worry on a piece that is always slamming around....up down....up down?? I am just wondering and in no way am I claiming to be a professional engine man.....just wondering I guess...anyone??

I like the way they have less mass, less friction, and ZERO worry about a cam going flat.
They are preforming flawlessly in my split, but it does have a very trick valve train with a 100 grams of weight removed from eack valve. VW sized duals are having no problem keeping everything tracking correctly.

The only real issue would be floating the valves, Jake Raby proved they will shatter if floated.

I *think* steel would be the worst material, even when compared to AS 41/21. Aluminum would better match the case material's expansion rate, and bronze would too.
The only concern I have over the stock AS case material is one of geometry, not material. The Shubecks take a pushrod that's aboot .4\" shorter which means the center of the side loading caused by the angle that the push rod intersects the lifter, has moved towards the cup end of the lifter. Is this a problem? I doubt it.
I'm of the opinion that if ONE person says its a problem, it's not proven by such a small sampling.
Plus the stock lifter bores may not have been correctly machined in the 1st place. Seen that.
The only ones that I KNOW that have had problems were subjected to extreme valve pressure and ran on a stutter box at aboot 8k, except for one recent failure that we believe the rocker broke 1st, bent a push rod and broke a piece off the corner of the lifter cup when the push rod bent and jammed up the works.
I'll be looking at my ally case out of the split this winter and I expect no surprises.

I just love how rumors get started (usually by people who have never had any direct experience or even seen what they are talking about).Thank god for all those people out there that are willing to try something new and follow through with it.There is a great group of enthusiasts in are volks community that kind of blazes a path for everyone else and I think thats awsome. Not everyone wants a low 12 or high 11 second street car but all that knowledge affects everyones project frow mild to wild.I think it is great passing on justified info. but not rumors through ignorance.Just my 2 bits.TJ

here is the only ceramic lifter i will talk about. ask me anything about it, and i will answer truthfully and honestly. i have first hand experience in the workings of this unit.

Well I sure hope those ceramics hold up. Those Udo Becker tool steel lifters are looking pretty damn good for 250 Euros (350 usd shipped) Apparently those lifters are the exact tool steel heat treated lifters as the old original wiezman german lifters. I Talked to a guy in Germany for a couple hours and so far as those things have debuted several months ago and the hardcore 10second and 11 second drag cars are loving them. So far they are just as good as the 400-500 euro original Wiezmans but those Udo lifters are 98 grams rather than the 58??gram original wiezman. German guys have used those Wiezmans for years and have had phenominal success.
If my airspeed ceramics blow up I'm gonna try the UDO ones. I believe Udo is using the tool steel lifters in his big mutha waterboxer 11.3 second daily driver on 100 RON octane fuel. I guess I'll ask my friend how Udo's lifters hold up.

Whoa. Didn't mean to stir the pot any. Just an ignorant guy wondering about what the big leaguers do and why.
I can see the elimination of wearing cam lobes a real benefit due to the friction of the ceramic as compared to steel. I would also imagine the ability of the ceramics to withstand heat without changing shape also beneficial. It seems as though there are no bodies here that have encountered my original thinking of shatter so that is good. Thanks to those for their first hand knowledge.

Bear in Hawaii and I believe on of the Lauffers exploded the ceramics but I dont know how many local boys in the 11's and 12's launch at 8500+ rpms at the line and beat the living crap out of the type 1 engine.
Lauffers convertible physco drag beetle gets a new rebuilt type 1 tranny every race so you'd imagine the average fast beetle running here in our area is just small peanuts compared to the big boys.
I hope my ceramics dont blow. I may be getting a set of UDO's soon aswell. This flat cam and pitting lifters is getting to be such a pain in the ass that I'll painfully take money out of my wallet to eliminate 1 problem.

HaHaHaHaHaHa!!!!
You nailed it, Darren!
Relax, young grasshoppa.
Now reduce some more weight in the valve train..........
